It's time to rethink how we treat osteoarthritis of the knee. In 2021–22, 53,500 knee replacements were performed to treat osteoarthritis in Australia. For the right patients, surgery can deliver a great outcome. Yet for many, surgery will not resolve their pain. By 2030, total knee replacements are expected to increase by 276% - according to a report published last month by Monash University. Weight loss and its impact on outcome of spine surgery: A recent study presented at a major orthopedic conference highlighted a significant association between weight loss and improved outcomes in spine surgery, especially Posterior Fusion. Findings suggest that patients who lose weight before surgery experience: Shorter operative time: Lower BMI leads to more efficient surgery. Reduced postoperative complications: Losing weight reduces the risk of infection and other complications. Faster recovery: Patients with excess weight loss can have faster recovery and better overall surgical results.
