Winemakers around Europe are harvesting at the moment. It’s also probably no surprise to those who know me that I’ve long had a passion for wine. Today, I use my background as an ethnographer to pursue my other passion of understanding human needs and creating innovative solutions. That’s why I pondered the current crisis in Bordeaux. Because amidst the challenges, I see opportunities to rethink and innovate one of the world’s most iconic wine regions. The crisis is driven by the lingering effects of Covid-19, Ukraine, and the omnipotent inflation. Failing demand coupled with unchanged supply has led to overproduction, creating immense price pressure and bankruptcies and following human tragedies, and younger consumers have long turned away from Bordeaux wines, seeking fresher alternatives like natural wine. These factors have gradually tightened Bordeaux's challenges, as the region still fumbles for long-term solutions. So what can Bordeaux do to meet these challenges? 💡 Innovation vectors: 1. Co-creation with consumers: Future generations of Bordeaux wines must be developed in close dialogue with consumers. My entrepreneurial project a few years back, Naturvinsklubben x Lassolle, is an example: Together with 20 Danish shareholders, we bought 3 hectares of vineyards in Lot-et-Garonne (100 km southeast of Bordeaux), producing natural wines, which we sold in Denmark. Bordeaux can learn from this approach of engaging more actively in co-creation. It’s not just about production methods but inviting consumers to join all steps of the process and building bridges to new segments through shared experiences and communities. Innovation happens when we listen to and collaborate with those we produce for. 2. Cultural transformation: Bordeaux needs to change its narrative and focus on new values - or even create its own. Ethnographic research can uncover where Bordeaux fits into modern consumers’ lives and the human stories that connect people on both sides of the wines. It’s about crafting a narrative that highlights authenticity, creativity, and other values that resonate with younger consumer segments. 3. Natural wine: Some articles suggest organic production as the uniform solution, but it can't be. Price pressures are too great. Instead, Bordeaux could consider leaning into a position as leading in natural wine production, even if this ‘niche’ still faces huge resistance within the industry. Ethnographic analysis can help understand both consumer and winegrower perspectives, revealing how Bordeaux can approach natural wine in a way that balances tradition with renewal. Ultimately, it’s about exploring what future wine consumers want and how Bordeaux can position itself as an innovative region relevant for the future. With a focus on sustainability, human stories, and co-creation, I believe this crisis can indeed be turned into an opportunity. #Innovation #Anthropology #Sustainability #Bordeaux #CoCreation #Businessmodel #FutureOfWine
