I recently observed a leadership training in the session of cultivating coaching as an integral part of being an effective leader. Listening is on the top of the list of coaching competency and so leadership skill. This brought me to share the four levels of listening by Otto Scharmer, which I learnt about at the beginning of my fundamental coaching training several years ago: - Level 1. Downloading from the habit of judgement - Level 2. Factual listening with an open mind noticing differences - Level 3. Empathic listening with an open heart seeing through another person’s eyes with emotional connection - Level 4. Generative listening with an open will connecting to an emerging higher future self of the other person Of course, the four levels of listening are relevant at different contexts in the professional world and personal life. Yet, it is not possible to create transformative change if to stay at the habitual downloading mode of listening. It took me these years to practice and reflect to better embrace generative listening, in a space that my presence is in the client’s world and seeing the future higher self emerging and then a permanent shift from the current state of challenges.
