Five days later, Christmas Day 2024 is a hazy echo - the hot cross buns are already in the supermarkets #movingrightalong What's your overriding memory? The platters of food, the piles of presents, the days of prep, the travel to and from festive destinations, the thankfully cooler weather? At Mission Australia's Christmas Lunch in the Park at Wellington Square, festive fare and even Santa's arrival on a revving motorcycle, paled in comparison to a far simpler and richer gift for its guests; the growing number of Perth people in need. It was about being with others, not being alone, connecting, sharing time with friends and family, rekindling old friendships, starting new ones, finding moments of shared peace and happiness in a complicated world. It sounds basic, right? Far from it. For weeks in the lead-up to Christmas Day, and for many days after, the Mission Australia WA team plans this incredible event in East Perth, striving to improve on each previous year. And it's replicated in capital cities across Australia. In Perth, around 300 volunteers proudly enabled up to 1,500 people to spend time in a welcoming, safe environment where guests could stock up on clean donated clothes, get a haircut, do a load of washing, borrow a book, charge their phone, chat to a pastor, eat lunch, watch kids gleefully open a present, and be together with others on a day when loneliness can feel overwhelming. It's much-needed in our wealthy city where many are fortunate, but where a growing community of vulnerable people also deserve the opportunity to feel the vital human emotions of hope and love, under a giant marquee filled with friendship and goodwill, even if only for a few hours. We're ending the week with a pair of opportunities that are still open with Five Counties Children's Centre. One is urgent, so please take a look. Five Counties Children's Centre was founded by Rotary members who saw a need for a close clinic where children with disabilities could get treatment and therapy without parents/ caregivers driving to Toronto. Nearly 50 years later, the client list is in the six-thousands, with over 2000 wait-listed . With numbers like that, you can see how fundraising events are very important. Their Backyard Summer Social is coming up on the 22nd and they need help with set-up, operations, and tear-down. Because it's an adult-oriented event, the volunteers must be over 19 yrs old. The event is in the backyard of the centre, and accessible by public transit. And there will be snacks! It's pretty much as described. People send money to Five Counties and bi-weekly for a couple of hours, you call those nice people back to thank them for that very important donation. And if you're unable to afford a donation yourself, this is a way you can contribute more than money. It's a remote opportunity and time-flexible. Volunteering at the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless’s Sort & Pack event was nothing short of epic! Seriously, seeing everyone—from kids to grandparents—come together to support one cause was just fantastic. I mean, who knew packing backpacks could be so motivational? Helping a community like LICH keeps me going; I could tell everyone else felt the same energy.   Now, let’s talk about the heat. I haven’t sweat that much since…well, ever. It was like Mother Nature decided to throw in a free sauna session! But honestly, it was all worth it. The thought of someone out there smiling because of the backpack I packed? Priceless. I can’t wait to do it again at the next event—hopefully, it’ll be a bit cooler!   Also, a big shoutout to our Jovia Financial Credit Union team members, who, internally throughout the organization, helped collect over 1,300 individual school supplies and to everyone who came out to help sort & pack those supplies. This past weekend, I had the privilege of stepping into the boots of Santa Claus at my local church Craft Fair. For the fourth year in a row, I donned the red suit, greeted excited children, and posed for pictures that brought smiles to both kids and their parents. But this role goes beyond spreading holiday cheer—it’s an opportunity to give back. Our Santa photo sessions raised funds for the church’s Outreach program, ensuring that children in need will have presents under the tree this Christmas. Volunteering has been a constant in my life, and during my job search, it’s become even more rewarding. It reminds me of the importance of: ✅ Purpose: Supporting meaningful causes keeps me grounded and focused on the positive impact we can all have. ✅ Community: Connecting with others, whether they’re children excited to meet Santa or parents supporting a great cause, strengthens my relationships and network. ✅ Leadership through service: Volunteering is a great way to demonstrate commitment, reliability, and the ability to bring people together for a common goal.
