Why should every market researcher learn NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT from the early stages of their career? 🤔 The other day, I had an interesting chat with an impressive QUAL candidate who was focused on pivoting out of delivery and into the growth space (aka, she wanted a commercial/BD-led role!) Why was it unusual? Researchers usually shy away from business development. I've lost count of how many times I was told by an AD (I want a salary increase and progress to a Director's level - looking for min £85k-£100k, but I don't want any BD in my role - 'it's just NOT ME'). But hang on ... You want a STRATEGIC role in a company without any commercial input? Young researchers (and insight professionals in general) need to change their MINDSET and strive to learn BD skills from the outset. Why? 1] It will take you out of your comfort zone! Engaging in BD pushes you beyond mere data interpretation. It forces you to see the bigger picture, think long-term, and challenge the notion that you've reached your peak. 2] It will elevate your career --> Without a grasp on BD, reaching senior or board-level positions will never materialise. Remember last year's harsh reality? MR agencies were quick to make research staff redundant while hiring for BD people! 3] It will boost your credibility --> Clients respect professionals who not only understand data but can also foresee and contribute to the growth of their business. Consolidate the inputs in the form of Short Reports. • Developing credible Knowledge resources in the form of Short/Long Reports, Case- Studies, and Blogs to be published and shared with Stakeholders widely. • To write policy briefs for selective audiences and research papers suitable for publication in high-quality academic journals. • Development of agenda/notes for various activities including meetings/capacity building programs/workshops, conferences, preparing minutes, and dissemination. • Provide Qualitative Research Input for Business Proposals. Plan & Co-Ordinate Research Projects • Develop Plans and frameworks for Research Projects. • Identify and engage with stakeholders to carry out in-depth research with relevant. literature reviews, and research methodologies. This would include but not be limited to the development of Concept Notes, Proposals, and Framework for Stakeholder Input. • Work on research requests from senior researchers, discuss research needs, and prepare responses that synthesize and analyze information. Qualifications and Experience:- • Minimum 2 – 8 years of experience in the field of research, policy/industry engagement. • Background in development studies or related fields would be important. • Background in energy technology or related field would be important. • Experience in conducting research and analyzing data (Mixed methods) essential. • Strong capability to research, write, communicate, facilitate and present cogently to all levels with government, international agencies, industries, clients, and internal staff and management. • Significant experience working in international development settings with partners from multiple countries almost essential. • Authoring original work for academic journal papers, conference papers or technical reports would be useful but not essential. Why do companies hire researchers and strategists to deliver insights, but sometimes not have the bandwidth or political will to effect change based on the insights? It reminds me of when you go to the supermarket and you aspirationally buy lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, more than you can consume and cook before it goes bad. So it gets moldy in your fridge. Don't let research get moldy! If you hire an outside researcher, think hard about how to empower your employees to implement the insights the researcher delivers. That may mean taking some current responsibilities off their plate. Otherwise your (research) eyes are bigger than your stomach.
