Continuing on the topic of #biomanufacturing At this year's SynBioBeta I heard a speaker say "Cells don't like to scuba dive." Beyond being a funny and evocative description of the conditions in large bioreactors, I found this a striking statement about how much more complicated biology is than conventional machinery. This was very much on my mind when I talked to Diego Laje for this article. The unpredictability of biology raises interesting concerns for a community thinking about national security, ones that might not be top-of-mind for the folks struggling just to make the technology work. This is another example of why it's so important to keep the scientific, entrepreneurial, and governmental sectors talking to each other.

Welcome to Tech Talk Thursdays. Each week we will focus on science - looking at new developments or the evolution of older techniques. This week, we will look at the Development of advanced feeding strategies for high throughput mini-bioreactor systems, and consider the dissertation by Annina Kemmer. In this ever-changing landscape, where biopharma and biotech industries are constantly transforming and adapting, the development and optimization of bioprocesses remain at the forefront. Annina Kemmer’s recent dissertation, “Development of Advanced Feeding Strategies for High Throughput Mini-Bioreactor Systems,” is a remarkable achievement in that respect. More precisely, the key breakthroughs are the modular computational frameworks introduced; far from a step, it is a giant leap towards flexible, efficient, and reliable bioprocess monitoring and control. The beauty of these frameworks is that they lay a reliable foundation for model-based monitoring and control of bioprocesses. With modules for reading data from numerous sources, writing setpoints, model definition, and parametrization, these frameworks make bioprocess development a matter of not keeping up with industrial demands but being several steps ahead. The ability to adapt and refine these processes on the fly is, in a word, revolutionary, providing a level of control and flexibility never seen before. As for the work itself, it is an outstanding achievement in terms of both foresight – identifying the challenges to modern miniaturized cultivation systems – and solving those precise challenges. By far the most impressive part is the way the traditional issues with developing analytical technology for critical process variables , such as biomass concentration, or dealing with metabolic adaptations under stress, are covered. This ensures not only the reliability but the robust normal operation of the process under a wide range of conditions. The impact of this work is resounding. By allowing a more refined and responsive approach to bioprocess monitoring and control, Kemmer’s work lays the groundwork for a future where bioprocess development is more efficient, predictable, and scalable.
