I am often asked - "What is the approach to sustainability at Gravis?" This video courtesy Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container Association (FIBCA) provides a nice overview of the positive environmental impacts of moving to bulk packaging (FIBCs). My view of the three Rs in context of our industry: Reuse: FIBCs are designed with a high safety factor, so can be reused. Potential for contamination will continue to be a concern for food grade packaging, though 'downgrading' bags into less sensitive applications is fairly common. Reduce: Reduction of transportation costs by better cubing out space. Potentially less material by going for bulk packaging vs small/mid sized packages. Recycle: Already a common practice in the industry and something to build upon. The scrap economics are currently marginal, though landfill avoidance is a clear benefit.
