Been some weeks since I was asked to join handful of other VCs at Fortune Brainstorm Tech - Darian Shirazi, Guru Chahal, Mary D'Onofrio, + Lila Tretikov - to lead a timely discussion on investing in AI. Our chats tied directly to this week’s OpenAI financing, along with US economy’s recent near-record low unemployment rate. Some key takeaways: —> Historically, no major technology shift resulted in fewer jobs or a smaller economy; AI is not coming for your job, but the nature of jobs may change. —> Tricky to invest in AI right now: 90% of AI companies are probably overvalued, and 10% are undervalued - and hard to know which is which. —> Mixed views on AI’s impact on software development/engineering. Some CEOs reported needing fewer developers to achieve similar output, while others felt AI ‘agents’ or ‘co-pilots’ were counterproductive, and led to more errors and the need for repetitive reviews. Nomic AI, a New York City based startup, raised $17m in Series A funding during July. A team of 4 at the time, the investment valued the startup at $100m, highlighting an ongoing trend of VCs backing small teams building popular AI products.
