This June and July, the European Council and the European Commission's President launched their "Strategic Agenda 2024-2029" and "The European Commission's Political Guidelines 2024-2029", respectively. Both put a big emphasis on the value of #democracy. In fact, apparently, it is the first time ever that a specific priority on democracy in the European Council's documents is included. That's telling. And what a better place and time to bring back this 2019 article on why democracy matters for achieving #HealthEquity. Democratic institutions are part of establishing the conditions that empower individuals and communities, ensure participation is meaningful, and establish decision-making processes that are accountable and transparent. This generates coherent policies by making participation inclusive, which can only be such where economic barriers to participate are alleviated and where the governance structures ensure the communities affected by policy decisions to have a meaningful voice that influences outcomes in these processes. "To allow all people in Europe to prosper and flourish in health and in life, we need to recognise both the centrality of equity in health to the sustainable development of Europe and that political institutions are one of the essential conditions that make health equity possible". https://lnkd.in/ez8KmRGG

--- Sanctioning democratic backsliding in the European Union: transnational salience, negative intergovernmental spillover, and policy change --- In the Journal of European Public Policy, Prof Dr Michael Blauberger and his co-author theorise two processes, namely public salience and intergovernmental policy cooperation, that can account for why EU policy changed from inaction to enforcement with the introduction of budget conditionality regulation to combat backsliding in Hungary and Poland from 2021. Like every 5 years after the elections there is a specific time on the European Parliament calendar dedicated to meetings of the political groups. These meetings are happening now. To build up a political group in the European Parliament several conditions have to be met. More details in our briefing. #politicalgroups #EuropeanParliament
🔎 What are the rules on political groups in the European Parliament? 🤝 Members form political groups organised by political affiliation (not by nationality). To form a political group, they need minimum 23 MEPs from at least 7 EU countries. Belonging to a political group is of particular relevance when it comes to the allocation of key positions in Parliament's political and organisational structures, such as committee and delegation chairs and rapporteurships on important dossiers. 📜 "All of this is a symptom of a world in which everything is weaponised and contested. Where there is a clear attempt to divide and polarise our societies. I am deeply concerned about these trends. But I am convinced that Europe – a strong Europe – can rise to the challenge." 📜 Congratulations to Ursula von der Leyen on her re-election as President of the European Commission and we send our most sincere best wishes for a very successful mandate. We look forward to continuing working closely with the European Commission, in this new mandate, to build a stronger and less polarised Europe. The next five years will be crucial to address the most pressing issues faced by the European Union and to provide the most innovative solutions to tackle them. It will be important to focus on dialogue and cooperation, on building bridges, and on what unites us rather than what divides us. #StrongerInDiversity

Breaking: Ursula von der Leyen elected as new EU Commission chief. What is necessary in the next EU? We commented on her speech and strategic plan below: 1️⃣ On #Gaza, we need the EU to take urgent action, including calling for an immediate and permanent #ceasefire, for Israel to allow a full and unfettered humanitarian response, and for Israel to foot the reconstruction bill for water and sanitation infrastructure. We need a #ceasefireNOW! Our report, Water War Crimes, published today, shows how water is used as a weapon of war. Read here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eEmVPUPw 2️⃣ On migration, the EU must ensure a safe and humane way for asylum and migration. We need rules that put people first and do not use them as political bargaining chips. Want to know more? Read our statement with over 90 NGOs demanding the EU ditch plans to offload their migration responsibilities to countries outside of Europe 👉 https://t.co/r1N02TFl8C 3️⃣ The EU's duty to prioritise poverty eradication in its development policy is sorely missing. The Global Gateway threatens to privatise EU aid and begs the question of who will really profit? EU companies and countries, or those in need? 4️⃣ On #climate, we need to urgently stop the climate crisis, while also changing agri policies and commercial practices to end food insecurity and guarantee a living income for farmers worldwide, including EU farmers. Climate. Inequality. Hunger. It’s all the same fight. 5️⃣ On inequality, the super-rich become richer and the poor poorer. Yet, EU governments fail to tax Europe’s wealthiest fairly and miss out on 33m EUR an hour in unpaid taxes from Europe’s multimillionaires. It's simple. It's time to #TaxtheRichEU. 👉 As we look at the EU's new priorities, we must remember Europe’s future cannot be built on policies underpinned by short-termism, insularism, or denial. It is clear that Ursula von der Leyen and our EU leaders must face challenges head-on and create a future that puts people and the planet first.

Another extract: 'I want Europe to make the most of the biotech revolution. Biotechnologies, supported by AI and digital tools, can help modernise entire parts of our economy, from farming and forestry, to energy and health. In order to make it easier to bring biotech from the laboratory to factory and then onto the market we will propose a new European Biotech Act in 2025.'
