Our Head of Medical Seamus Harrison represented our organisation at the UK House of Lords yesterday, where we shared our views on AI in healthcare. The use of AI and Machine Learning has transformative potential to enhance patient outcomes. The UK is well-placed to leverage these technologies, with excellent health data resources available to validate these tools. It is also essential to maintain diversity in our datasets: new technology must be used to tackle health inequalities, rather than perpetuate them. At Genomics, we are well-placed to contribute to this increasingly prominent conversation. Thank you UKAI for organising the discussion! #UKAI #AIRegulation #AIOAP #healthcare #healthcareinnovation #UKGovernment AI Safety Institute #AI #diversity

🚨 A recent study from Yale School of Medicine sheds light on a critical issue in healthcare: how AI bias can exacerbate healthcare disparities. Published in PLOS Digital Health, the research highlights the various stages of AI model development where bias can creep in—training data, model development, publication, and implementation. The findings emphasize the concept of "bias in; bias out," meaning that if the data used to train AI is biased, the outcomes will be too. It is essential to recognize that the computer does not introduce bias. It only reflects the bias that exists. The problem is that you can then put bias on steroids through these models. As we advance the field of medical AI, it's crucial to address these biases to ensure equitable healthcare for all patients. #Healthcare #AI #HealthEquity #BiasMitigation Yale study shows how AI bias worsens healthcare disparities https://buff.ly/497HhL9

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine refers to the application of advanced computational algorithms and machine learning techniques to analyze vast amounts of medical data, ranging from patient records and diagnostic images to genomic information. By leveraging these technologies, AI aims to enhance medical decision-making, improve diagnostic accuracy, and streamline healthcare processes. It enables the development of predictive models for disease outcomes, assists in personalized treatment plans, and facilitates the identification of patterns and trends that may not be readily apparent to human practitioners. The integration of AI in medicine holds the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery by optimizing resource utilization, reducing errors, and ultimately contributing to more efficient and effective patients. I'm excited to be attending the RAISE Health Symposium 2024 virtually today! 🎉 Key takeaways from the sessions so far: 🤖 First Principles in AI: The importance of AI governance throughout the lifecycle of the AI 'product.' 🔍 Key Issues: Ensuring accuracy, reliability, and trustworthiness in AI information. How do we address the pillars of trust? 📜 Historical Trends: Reflecting on the history of medicine, such as when laboratory medicine wasn't included in the physician curriculum. ⚖️ Legal Standards: Evolving standards of care with AI. Does AI change the standard of care if the physician does or does not consult with it? Who is liable? Looking forward to more insightful discussions and learning opportunities! #AI #Governance #Healthcare #LegalStandards
