Got shortlisted for a post at one of UAE’s leading companies with a diversified portfolio across multiple sectors. The recruiter reached out 4 weeks ago, collected my details, and mentioned they would reconnect if my profile matched the job requirements. After 3 weeks, I was asked to meet the hiring manager in Abu Dhabi despite being based in Dubai. Following the long journey, I was informed during the interview that my experience didn't align with the role. Despite highlighting the relevance of my prior responsibilities matching those on LinkedIn, the outcome was disappointing. While understanding the hiring manager's discretion, this journey of 350KM (3.5 hours round trip) for a meeting left me surprised. It's essential for recruiters and hiring managers to consider the efforts individuals make when scheduling meetings across cities to avoid such situations. A sincere message to all recruiters and hiring managers: avoid inconveniencing candidates by conducting thorough pre-screenings, such as video calls, to prevent unnecessary time and resource wastage. Trying to land a job in the UAE/KSA from abroad? Take 60 seconds to read this post. If you’re used to finding a job in the UK, EU, US, CA… (and pretty much anywhere else that’s not the GCC) Landing a job here is NOT the same. What works at home doesn’t necessarily work here. Here are some things you NEED to know: 1: hyper saturation - in most cases, there are 10x+ more applicants for the roles you’ll be applying to, don’t let it put you off applying. 2: automation - due to the sheer volume of talent on the market, hiring teams will increase reliance on automation, leading to the “thank you for applying” emails. 3: selection - recruitment teams will usually give preference to disqualification instead of qualification, this means the small mistakes can take you out of the running. 4: headhunting - headhunting plays a huge role in recruitment in the region, but the market is active, so they’ll only need to contact a small number of applicants. I’ll be conducting a live session on navigating these challenges and landing interviews in the region. The session will be announced on Thursdays post. Lets talk... *Process* - Why don't you receive engagement after you press the apply button? How to avoid being missed in the large pile of applicants? As a Recruiter settling into the UAE market, having previously worked in the UK - I can absolutely, no doubt say that the volume and competition in the UAE is unlike anything you could imagine. It is crazy competitive, theres a significant amount of talent either already based here - or looking to relocate here. The biggest struggle out here for many candidates is the ability to be seen once you have hit that apply button. Why? Because any one job advert can receive 1000 - 4000 applications (And thats on a good day, depending on the role this can be as high as 7000).
