We're a metacognitive geological process. Think of us as a self-aware volcanic eruption. We're conscious of our erupting. So. Earth has itself instigated several massive extinction events. It's not unprecedented. Our consensus views on climate change negates the fact that we are an Earth process. Another example of human exceptionalism, but, I would say we are no different from a volcano. And, just like the volcano we, seemingly, as unable to cease the eruption, until the eruption naturally ceases and pressure normalises. Are we able to evolve self-correcting geochemical processes within our psychosocial collective experiential domain? Can we be a self controlled volcanic eruption? Can we guide our now?

Four Eruptions in Four Months. With Each Eruption Getting More Powerful. Iceland may expect a historically significant natural disaster after a submerged volcano animated in Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula.

Massive volcanic eruptions pose a significant threat to global climate and society, as demonstrated by the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora, which led to widespread weather anomalies, crop failures and a cholera pandemic — the likelihood of a similar event occurring this century is estimated at 1 in 6, with potential economic costs exceeding $3.6 trillion in the first year alone

The volcanic system on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula has woken up. Vikings roamed the last time these volcanoes raged. Now, eight centuries later, this slice of land close to the capital city Reykjavik is one of the more densely populated parts of the country. The recent eruptions here are not from “tourist volcanoes,” relatively accessible and typically non-disruptive. They are violent, dangerous and could last centuries. They could also hold the key to a new future. Scientists and engineers are hoping to harness magma’s immense power to produce a new kind of extreme geothermal energy, many times more powerful than conventional. It’s a tantalizing prospect as the world struggles to end its relationship with planet-heating fossil fuels. The Hunga Tonga eruption in 2022 should have been our wake up call. The closest seismometers were more than 700 km away and we were not prepared for the impacts that followed. Now imagine a larger eruption in more populated area, and the global consequences this would have, e.g. extreme climate shock. The world invests so little in volcano preparedness compared with other global risks like Asteroid impacts and yet volcanic eruptions of this magnitude are hundreds of times more likely. Coming from a volcanic island, I have always been keenly aware of the awe inspiring beauty of our nature, beauty that comes with a terrible price. Times and times again, our volcanoes have harvested the life of the population, as well sowing destruction. There is, however, a flip side to this, a positive one. This nature breeds resilience and resourcefulness, and quickly we learnt to harvest the powers in our volcanic land. Hot springs gave baths and washing, and later, high energy fields were discovered and harnessed for production of electricity and geothermal hot water to heat our houses. The next level is, obviously, to harness the awesome energy that is the magma itself - the innovation as disruptive as disruptive can be. Drill it, understand it, harness it - forget the uncertain wind power or the polluting carbohydrates of oil, gas and coal. Harness the volcano. So if you think your innovation is too crazy, you should rather be asking, is it crazy enaugh!

We need more volcanoes. 🌋 Or at least we need to mimic volcanos if we're going to gain enough time to decarbonise the global economy. We're seeing real exit velocity on solar, wind, batteries and electric vehicles, but it won't be enough to curb CO2 emissions at the pace that we need to. We're working on extracting CO2, but for the time being, it remains stubbornly expensive at - $100 per ton*. Turns out that if we reflect just 2% of sunlight, we can provide the necessary time window to decarbonise 'safely'. How? By mimicking what volcanoes have been doing for billions of years and putting sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the stratosphere. For context, 2M tons (the requirement) is 8x less than the eruption of Mt Pinatubo, 50X less than our current emissions and 4X less than we used to emit through shipping. Fascinated? Me too.
