Territory Manager- Agricultural Products- Otago/Southland at BASF

This is an interesting & well intentioned good move towards wildlife management discussions. While this is specific to the UK, a similar principle should be applied here in New Zealand. As NZs introduced wild animal numbers continue to grow, specifically the deer species, better animal management will be needed. All but gone are the days of the taxpayer funded cycle of destruction at huge loss to financial & intrinsic values we have done in the past by seeing deer only as a pest. Quality integrated wildlife management is the only logical way forward & the discussion needs to begin like is being done in this example in the UK. Better understanding, education & collaboration by all stakeholders & the public will bring better solutions rather than seeing deer as nothing but a liability pest, as we currently do.

Founder and Executive Director at SCOTLAND: The Big Picture. Working to make rewilding happen across Scotland. #MakingRewildingHappen #RewildingNation #generationrestoration

Nobody contests the value of deer and their vital role in the landscape. However, at high densities deer can negatively impact fragile peatlands and inhibit woodland regeneration, reducing biodiversity and impairing climate resilience. For decades, discussions about the management of deer have been characterised by low trust and entrenched opinions, with deer becoming a totem for conflict around wider changes in land use, but that could finally be changing. In the first in a series of films from SCOTLAND: The Big Picture's Fiadh project, we learn about the work of The Common Ground Forum, a network of stakeholders from the upland deer sector, who are committed to a more collaborative approach to deer management, based on mutual respect and consensus building. SBP is committed to building bridges across contested spaces, and encouraging a more solutions-focused conversation around Scotland’s deer.
