Solutions Addressing the Nursing Shortage in Aged Care
Healthcare and aged care worker shortages are persistent issues both in Australia and overseas. Recently, The Age, reported that the national nursing shortage is expected to worsen, creating significant challenges for the aged care sector.
Despite the government's edict for aged care providers to increase the daily care delivered by a registered nurse to 44 minutes per resident from October, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) has called for stronger efforts to meet this requirement. The government forecasts that the shortage of nurses will persist every year until at least 2035, with demand far outstripping supply. This year alone, the aged care sector is short by 5,340 nurses, according to official figures.
While the situation is concerning, St. Simeon Aged Care believes that there are actionable strategies that can be implemented by both the sector and the government to address these shortages and ensure that residents and home care consumers receive the quality care they deserve:
1. Boosting funding for nursing education and training can attract more people to the profession, including those deterred by the pandemic. Scholarships, tuition aid, and clear career paths can make nursing more appealing to young people and career changers.
2. The aged care sector must create supportive work environments by offering competitive salaries, improving staff-to-resident ratios, and providing ongoing professional development to retain staff.
3. The government should streamline immigration for qualified overseas nurses to quickly fill workforce gaps.
4. Technology like telehealth and AI can ease the burden on nursing staff by automating tasks and enhancing care efficiency.
5. Using multi-disciplinary teams, including allied health professionals, can balance workloads and ensure comprehensive care without overloading nurses.
6. Collaboration between the government, providers, and the ANMF is crucial to developing long-term strategies that tackle the root causes of the nursing shortage.
By adopting these strategies, we can create a more sustainable and effective aged care system that not only meets the current demand but also prepares for the future. At St. Simeon Aged Care, we are committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that our residents and home care consumers are never compromised on the quality of care they receive.
