In the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris's ascension as the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party, the Howard University Initiative on Public Opinion conducted a poll on the opinions of Black voters July 22-24 in relation to Harris's candidacy. The report includes results from more than 2000 respondents from more than 30 states, weighted by gender and education level. Results suggest that Harris is best known for her advocacy for reproductive rights, that her best path to victory is to select a white male running mate, and that respondents view her as a politically moderate Democrat. The poll results also show that 93% of those polled plan to vote for VP Kamala Harris. https://lnkd.in/e_S57qf7

“If you look at the data, there’s just broad swaths of people across demographic groups who agree with the need to codify those protections.” - GSG Partner Angela Kuefler The proposed Equal Rights Amendment in New York would explicitly protect reproductive rights and prohibit discrimination across a wider range of characteristics. According to our team’s research, this critical legislation is supported by a bipartisan majority of New Yorkers — we look forward to seeing its passage come November. Why Reproductive Rights Weren’t Enough: Insights from the 2024 Election As we reflect on the 2024 election, it’s clear that reproductive rights, while crucial, weren’t enough to propel Vice President Kamala Harris past Donald Trump. In my recent interview with U.S. News & World Report, I share with Cecelia Smith-Schoenwalder the complex dynamics at play. Despite strong support for abortion measures in 10 states, Harris underperformed compared to President Biden’s 2020 results, particularly among Hispanic women and white voters without a college degree. This election underscores the challenges women candidates face and the evolving priorities of the electorate. Read more about my analysis and the surprising trends that emerged. Let’s continue the conversation on how we can better support women’s rights and political representation. #ReproductiveRights #WomenInPolitics #PoliticalAnalysis

I love the music of the 1970s but do why are we revisiting the issues of the era? Time to move on. It’s troubling to see how restrictive reproductive rights policies in modern America continue to suppress women’s autonomy, especially in a society that economically compels women to work and offers inadequate protections from abuse. This issue also highlights a broader concern: the futility of workplace diversity programs that seem more focused on appearance than meaningful change. It’s incongruous to say the least. True diversity, equity, and inclusion require addressing systemic issues, not just surface-level initiatives. It’s time for a more genuine commitment to these values. Kamala Harris, Donald Trump and Reproductive Rights: One of the major areas of disagreement between Kamala Harris and Donald is in the area of reproductive rights. Kamala Harris supports a woman's right to choose. Donald Trump supports anti-abortion legislation. This may be a significant issue where 6 out of 10 Americans support the right of women to control their own bodies. "6 in 10 Americans support abortion rights. This could be the advantage Kamala Harris needs against Donald Trump" by Prudence Flowers for The Conversation "What a Kamala Harris presidency would mean for health care in America. Former advisers and health policy experts expect her to lean into reproductive rights, build on the Obama-Biden legacy and carve out her own vision to overhaul the system further." by Sahil Kapur and Berkeley Lovelace Jr. for NBC News "The GOP doesn’t want to talk about abortion. Harris wants to make them. Democrats have made abortion rights a cornerstone of the 2024 campaign, but Biden’s disastrous debate and a month’s worth of questions over whether his campaign could continue sidelined the issue." by Megan Messerly and Alice Miranda Ollstein for Politico. As we approach the November 2024 election, the importance of women's health and reproductive rights is once again at the forefront of the conversation. Florida's Amendment 4, which will be on the ballot, is not just another vote—it's a critical decision that will impact the future of healthcare and bodily autonomy in the state. Amendment 4 aims to enshrine the right to abortion in the Florida Constitution, ensuring that no law can prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before fetal viability or when necessary to protect the patient's health. This is about more than just a legal right—it's about safeguarding the ability of women to make decisions about their own bodies and health without unnecessary government interference. Reproductive rights are fundamental to the broader struggle for gender equality. Access to safe and legal abortion services is essential for women's health, economic stability, and the ability to control their own futures. This amendment is a chance for Florida to protect these rights at a time when they are increasingly under threat across the country. Voting YES on Amendment 4 means standing up for the reproductive freedom that women deserve. It means recognizing that women should have the autonomy to make healthcare decisions in consultation with their medical providers, free from political agendas. If you live in Florida, use your voice and your vote to ensure that women’s health and rights are respected and protected in Florida. This is more than a ballot initiative—it's a vital moment in the ongoing fight for equality and justice. #WomensHealth #ReproductiveRights #Amendment4 #FloridaVotes #HealthcareRights

Two years after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the pro-life movement and its Republican allies found themselves unprepared for the implications. The triumph in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization now appears more like a tragedy, raising pressing questions for the movement and its stakeholders. The absence of consensus among Republicans on key issues post-Roe has led to a political vacuum, enabling extreme activists to drive draconian measures at the state level. As they grapple with new challenges, Republicans face debates on bans, exceptions, penalties, and more, highlighting the complexities of navigating a post-Roe world. The recent rejection of a challenge to abortion and miscarriage-management drug use underscores ongoing efforts to restrict access, illustrating the evolving landscape surrounding reproductive rights. The International Planned Parenthood Federation is concerned by the grave implications that a second Trump Presidency – with full backing from a Republican majority in Congress – poses to health and human rights in the U.S. and across the world. Anticipated rollbacks on reproductive rights, gender and sexuality, outlined within the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 agenda, risk the undermining and reversal of hard-won gains for the rights of women, LGBTQI+ people and marginalised communities worldwide. On the global stage, Trump’s win takes place within an increasingly restrictive legislative and policy environment for sexual and reproductive rights around the world, furthered by the growing influence of a global anti-rights movement to which Trump and his allies are closely tied. Comprising a diverse range of actors, including politically conservative think tanks, lobbyists, along with authoritarian and conservative governments, this movement seeks to erode human rights through highly coordinated and well-resourced efforts in national and global arenas, threatening to reverse decades of progress 🔙. The coming wave of powerful attacks on women’s health and rights is a tragedy. FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) stands with International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and allies around the world who are committed to standing tall and standing together to defend women’s bodily autonomy and their right to comprehensive health care. Women’s health and rights shouldn’t be subject to the whim of politicians. #womenshealth
