Technical writing in exotic locations! Kim started a new project this week, finding herself interviewing a subject matter expert in his natural environment, a very old workshop with well trodden floors. For our process, it is critically important to understand the requirements of the client up front. This allows us to plan appropriately and ensure all the desired outcomes are captured. In this case we are looking for gaps in existing documentation, so understanding both current state and desired future state is the challenge. It also pays to build a good relationship with each member of the project team such that they feel comfortable with sharing their knowledge and experience. ## Stand up for yourself My Project Manager asked me to join an Engineering meeting to take notes. I am a Technical Writer. I have my deliverables. Why would I waste my 1 hour of productivity to make notes for a meeting, which makes no sense to me? I declined the meeting. In another instance, a Sales Director asked me to take print-outs for him. I took out the print-outs, went straight into my boss's room, and told him to hire someone else. My boss cooled me down, apologised and promised this would never happen again.
