Heather Shaner, a fierce, blue-haired defense attorney from D.C., has been championing those who can’t afford legal representation for over 40 years. However, after January 6th, 2021, when a violent mob stormed the U.S. Capitol, her empathy was put to the ultimate test. Shaner was tasked with defending two nonviolent rioters: Jack Griffith, a social media influencer, and Annie Howell, a single mother and painter. According to Shaner, both were misled by misinformation instigating the attack, believing they were defending democracy. The documentary “Public Defender,” supported by the Pulitzer Center, delves into the fragile state of U.S. democracy and the people dedicated to safeguarding it. Watch as Shaner’s journey reveals how trust and understanding can bridge the political divide and uncover our shared humanity. A documentary by grantee Andrea Kalin and Spark Media. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dmFvp7eR

In a striking moment of change, the unveiling of a new statue of Lady Justice signals a powerful shift in how we perceive justice today. Traditionally, the blindfold on Lady Justice symbolizes impartiality, fairness, and the idea that justice should be delivered without bias. However, this new statue removes the blindfold, sparking deeper reflections on what justice really represents in modern times. As a student of law, I see this as a reminder that justice is not, and should not be, blind to the realities of the world. The removal of the blindfold suggests that justice must see—and acknowledge—the complexities of the system it operates within. From slow court processes to the backlog of cases, we face systemic challenges that demand attention. I believe this new representation calls for a more proactive justice system, one that not only delivers fair judgments but also acts swiftly and efficiently. After all - JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED. #Justice #LegalSystem #Impartiality #LegalReform #JusticeDelayedJusticeDenied #LawStudent #FastTrackJustice

Another great article posted by the Director of Second Look Network at The Sentencing Project regarding use of clemency powers to address excessive sentences. The number of older people in State & Federal prisons is increasing faster than any other age group. How could anyone claim that the point of incarceration was to incapacitate the truly dangerous when there are more people older than 55 in US prisons (165,000) than there are people in the high-crime range of 18-24? Geriatric healthcare in prison is both disgraceful and expensive. It costs on average, 3x more to incarcerate an older person than a younger one. Governor Andy Beshear could help alleviate the excessive costs mass incarceration has incurred on Kentucky as a proponent for second chances, and providing additional resources to protect public education and access to affordable healthcare-basic rights to the citizens of the Commonwealth. #SecondLookLaws #FreeKarenBrown
What an incredibly bold and inclusive way for a Governor to use clemency powers to address excessive sentences. Read New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy's clemency initiative at: https://lnkd.in/eXHPEwdj Governor Murphy's statement: “Today on Juneteenth, a day that celebrates freedom, I am incredibly proud to launch a historic clemency initiative. I’m committed to using my powers as Governor to pardon and commute sentences to address injustices and overly harsh sentences in our criminal justice system. Thank you @ltgovway, @pastor_rls, @meekmill, and @wallo267 of @reform, Amol Sinha of the @aclunj, Justin Dews, and everyone who joined us in Newark today in support of second chances and the values of justice, compassion, and rehabilitation."
