As an undergraduate, I took part in two REU programs that had a big impact on my academic journey. My first was during my sophomore year at Kent State University. This program helped me realize I wanted to pursue a Ph.D., but also that cancer research wasn’t for me. While I learned a lot, it was very challenging because I didn’t know how to ask the right questions to fully understand the research. Instead of being discouraged, I saw it as a learning opportunity. I applied for a second REU at Texas A&M University, and this time, everything clicked. By asking thoughtful questions and fully immersing myself in the work, I not only gained confidence in myself as a young scientist but also discovered my passion for bacteriophage research—a passion that brought me back to Texas A&M for my Ph.D. Now, after earning my Ph.D., I have the incredible opportunity to run our center's REU program. I'm excited to pay it forward and hope to inspire students just as my mentors inspired me. If you have questions about writing personal statements or navigating the application process (even if it’s not for the REU program at my center), please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m happy to help! P.S. Here’s a picture from my very first REU back in 2018. #REU #UndergraduateResearch #MentorshipMatters #GivingBack #ResearchOpportunities #SummerPrograms

Reminder: The National Institutes of Health is implementing revisions to the fellowship application and review process for due dates on or after January 25, 2025. Among other changes, NIH will no longer require/allow grades to be included in the application package and is updating fellowship biosketch instructions to indicate that change. Candidates will now be asked to discuss their scientific perspective on their field and how their work will advance its unsolved questions; and sponsors will now be asked to submit five statements outlining the candidates preparedness for the fellowship and mentorship plan. You can start thinking about your training project’s specific aims and approach, as well as talking with your sponsor about your career development plan. My colleagues, Prof. Levi Obonyo, Dr. Rosemary Nyaole-Kowuor, Dr. Daniel Robert Aswani, MPRSK, PhD, Dr. Lydia Radoli (PhD), and I have published a chapter with IGI Global in the book, 'Creating Dynamic Space in Higher Education: Modern Shifts in Policy, Competencies, and Governance. Our Chapter is titled, "Advances and Challenges in Problem-Based Learning: A Case Study of Daystar University. CBC demands that universities be prepared for its graduates by 2029. In response, Daystar University has integrated Problem-based Learning (PBL) across all the schools. Significant progress has been realized such as adopting technology-enhanced tools, increased faculty collaboration, and a growing culture of innovation among students. Challenges such as insufficient infrastructure and resistance to change can be surmounted through targeted faculty development, improved infrastructure, and stronger support systems to enhance PBL’s effectiveness in fostering more profound learning experiences. The hard copy book will be available in January. https://lnkd.in/djUQD5nE

For many scientists, the financial and emotional toll of caregiving, combined with their demanding work environment, can be a struggle. 🏡 In recognition of this reality, ASAP launched the Care & Career Program, a one-of-a-kind program designed to help offset growing costs and pressures related to family care among early-career researchers, postdocs, clinical coordinators, and others within the Collaborative Research Network and PPMI. The Care & Career Program has already made a significant impact, committing close to $2.5 million in stipends of up to $10,000. Programs like this are an investment in the future of science. 2 years as Dr Simple 👩🏻🎓 that’s camp! Doing my PhD through The Australian National University in the height of covid (as an off-campus student in Melbourne’s lockdowns 😮💨) was definitely an experience, but one that will stick with me forever. I’m very thankful and privileged to have been supported, guided, and kept in line by an amazing supervisory panel, and chief supervisor Professor Mary Rasmussen (The ML) - and I’m forever and gratefully in their debt. During graduation I delivered the Valedictorian/Student Address, where I spoke about the importance of Education for individuals and their communities, the need to push back against governments devaluing Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and my love of Education, studying, research, and learning - but I don’t think I’d like to return to it in the same way (no more lockdowns please and thank you). I might not be *in* academia as much anymore (I recently published a chapter in Gender Un/bound - link in my profile) but studying camp is a lifelong journey for a flamer like me 🌈 and continues to inform my DEI practice. In finishing my speech I posed this question to graduates, which I think is a good reflection for 2024 and heading into 2025: What will you do with your Education? What will you do for others? #PhD #doctorate #education #ANUgraduate
