From a predominantly agency-led practice to a statewide grassroots movement, prescribed fire has transformed significantly in California. Over the last few decades, there has been a massive shift to “reclaim fire as a tool for normal people,” according to Lenya Quinn-Davidson, Fire Network Director for the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UCANR). Her recent webinar on “California’s Prescribed Fire (R)evolution,” hosted by the California Fire Science Consortium, addresses the prescribed fire evolution/revolution in California and paths forward. Landowners, farmers, ranchers, and other community members are working together to conduct prescribed burns across the state. These informal, community-led movements have proved highly effective in changing how we think about and implement prescribed fire in California. Communities are demanding something different, and we shouldn’t underestimate the broader cultural and ecological implications of this local work. “That’s the cultural change that we need to allow for anything else to happen at a landscape level,” as Quinn-Davidson sees it. Search and Rescue calls are rising, and public lands are under increasing pressure. The Next Summit is dedicated to stopping these impacts before they start through online education, advocacy, and community outreach. CALLING WEEMS CREEK RESIDENTS: Severn River Association is holding a Community Meeting to discuss future restoration projects. Mark your calenders for Friday May 3 at the Annapolis Unitarian Universalist Church in Annapolis, 333 Dubois Rd, Annapolis 21401. Doors open 5:30pm, meeting will be 6-8pm. During this meeting: - SRA will give a brief presentation about the Severn River Action Plan and describe how we arrived at Weems Creek being the #1 priority for restoration. - Center for Watershed Protection will give a brief overview of the potential restoration projects in the Weems Creek watersheds that have been identified and vetted thus far. - We will be looking for feedback and input from community members. We will have a poster printout of the location and types of potential projects and will be looking to attendees to help us identify additional ways we can address stormwater and nutrient/sediment pollution. - We want to know where there are opportunities that residents will be able to interact with projects, whether that's passive like walking/driving past, incidental (like stopping to read an informational sign), or active (e.g. interest in volunteering to help with planting or maintaining the projects once constructed). 🌲🌳 Last week, Maryland reached a major conservation milestone — after setting its “30 by 30” goal in 2023, the state announced that, as of February 2024, it had reached this goal six years ahead of schedule. This means that the state has already conserved more than 1.85 million acres out of Maryland’s 6.1 million acres of total land area.   State leaders credit partnership as key to this conservation success, including working closely with local governments, nonprofit land trusts, conservation organizations, federal agencies, and landowners.
