This video I created captures the essence of Kakheti, the heart of Georgian winemaking. 🍇🍷 The Republic of Georgia, nestled in the Caucasus, holds a rich history as the birthplace of wine. It's a region where vines have intertwined with the land for millennia, and the grape harvest is a communal celebration. In bustling Tbilisi, everyone seems to have relatives in the countryside. When harvest season arrives, families and friends converge on the vineyards. The grape harvest isn't just about yield; it's about connection. Children go and help their relatives with the harvest, not with an expectation of compensation, but a good hardy meal. Upon completion of the day's work, they all gather to enjoy a grand feast with friends and family. A table laden with local delicacies and, of course, wine. 🍽️🍷 Georgian wine embodies the very essence of its terroir—the soil, climate, and spirit of the land. The wine is made in a traditional clay amphora, the kvevri, which doesn't allow the vessel to impart a significant flavor on the wine. Instead, you are generally greeted by heavy tannins and a unmistakably pure expression of the fruit itself. This is largely due to the fermentation process where the skins and stems are left on to ferment, leading to white wine grapes creating an 'amber' skin contact wine. Although there are some wineries now making wines in the European style of using oak barrels, the kvevri lives on as a testament to their tradition. Just as the kvevri is a pure expression of the fruit and terroir, Georgian culture with its ties to the land is a refreshing change in perspective and showcases a different culture. One that like its wine, is reflective of its land of origin. Chainsaw attacks on barrels. An all time quote. Traditionalists vs Modernists. The Barolo Wars. An excellent story, and well worth a trip down the rabbit hole. The "Barolo Wars" of the 1980s embodied a dramatic generational clash over the identity of Piedmont's most prestigious wine. The dispute centred on Nebbiolo's challenging natural characteristics - its fierce combination of high acidity and robust tannins. Traditionalists, led by Giovanni Conterno and Mascarello, championed methods passed down through generations: extended macerations of up to 30 days and aging in massive Slavonian oak casks, arguing this was the only way to reveal Barolo's true character. These producers lived by the philosophy that great Barolo demanded patience, requiring decades of aging to achieve harmony. The modernist rebellion was ignited by a younger generation of winemakers, most notably Elio Altare (pictured below) and Angelo Gaja, who challenged this rigid orthodoxy. Altare's dramatic act of taking a chainsaw to his father's traditional botti (large casks) symbolised the movement's revolutionary spirit. The modernists introduced French barriques, temperature-controlled fermentation, and shorter maceration times. As Altare famously declared, "I'm not interested in making great Barolo. I simply want to make great wine. And all the world's great red wines are matured in barriques." Our latest offer is the 2020 I Sodi di San Niccolo from Domini Castellare di Castellina, described by Antonio Galloni as ‘magical. This is remarkable in every day’, awarding it 97+ points. This particular wine caught our attention back in the 2013 vintage; we predicted great things for the estate. The 2016 seemed to confirm our initial belief, and now we have accessed a well-priced parcel of the 2020. Atlas’ MD Simon Larkin MW once commented that it was ‘heartening to still be able to pick up a lesser-known wine of similar calibre at a fraction of the price (of leading Tuscan Sangiovese)...but for how long will this be the case?’. A few years later, the same comment applies; it still ranks as a remarkably fairly priced Sangiovese, when judged against Pergole Torte, Flaccianello et al. The blend is 85% Sangioveto (a synonym for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera and it makes for a head-turning wine, showing all the ripeness you might expect in a strong Tuscan vintage, but none of the austerity that can typify young Sangiovese.
