I’m working on a series of interviews for #ThisCuriousLife magazine, focusing on #lifelonglearning and the resurgence of childhood hobbies in adulthood. What changes when we revisit these pastimes? Why do we stop in the first place, and what do we gain from picking them up again later in life? What helps us start again? This is the first instalment. Meet Isobel and her story, which illustrates how returning to childhood hobbies can be a source of #healing, #creativity, and #joy. When examining this illustrator's work, I find myself questioning the choice of child-like image to convey the intended message. What resonates with me about this message it brings to mind a conversation I had with my sister Jen regarding the concept of hobbies. Her remarked, "You need hobbies," to which I replied, "I don’t have any hobbies." What was I thinking? but the truth is, I do have hobbies; I just don’t label them as such. (Now I recognize how the illustrator employs whimsical images to emphasize this idea) and we as adults we tend to think that Hobbies are for kids. As we transition into adulthood, we engage in activities without identifying them as hobbies; we simply connect ourselves to those activities. When you foster positive change within, you tend to embrace it without assigning a label to it. This makes me wonder: if we labeled our activities as hobbies, would that make them more enticing to pursue? After all, our childhood memories remind us that hobbies brought us joy. 1) Cooking was one of my hobbies. Although I enjoyed it, I can't honestly say I was particularly skilled (my apologies). 2) Walking is another passion of mine. Every summer, you will find me at a nearby park; I adore taking walks, whether alone or with someone—without my cell phone, of course. 3)Yoga used to be a cherished practice for me, along with meditation. However, lately, yoga feels like a distant memory, which I regret. (Perhaps if I had labeled it as a hobby, I would have continued with it). 4) Going out with friends is something I truly love and continue to value. 5) Traveling is my happy place and safe place to reconnect with nature and embrace another environment 6) Enjoying a good show occasionally—does that count as a hobby? Just to clarify: binge-watching Netflix day and night isn’t what I consider a hobby. 7) Reading is another passion of mine, especially a good self-made stories, self-help, and business books. In conclusion, the core of this message is that whatever you once enjoyed or considered a hobby, you can start or revisit now. It’s even more fulfilling if you include someone you love—like a family member—encouraging them to revive a beloved hobby too. Having a hobby is not selfish, its looking after yourself. https://lnkd.in/gwyWZX-G Whether its a solo hobby, or something you share with other family members, make it something simple that you enjoy. Having been inside the PB for most of my life, I know what my reaction would have been: Oh a hobby is a waste of time, I can't afford it, what will people say if I miss a meeting? Put all that aside and start. A hobby doesn't need a purpose. Let it flow, just enjoy the moment. There are thousands of hobby's for you to explore. Have a Hobby I invest in stocks and bonds, create financial plans, and get people to and through retirement for a living. However, at the end of the day, and on weekends, I check out. I desperately need to unwind. To that end, I have several hobbies which I love. One can be seen below: my beloved Taylor 214 acoustic. I am also a big photography buff (I use a Nikon D780 + about 13 different lenses), and I absolutely love to read. But more on that hobby thing… Do you work hard? Do you give your career your all – each and every day? 110%? If you answered "yes" to one or more of those questions, you need a diversion. The guitar, camera, and bookshelf are mine. When I'm playing, photographing, or reading, time stops. It freezes. The issues and problems of work peel away. It's just me and the guitar, camera, or book. Nothing else matters at that moment. There's a book on this, by the way; it's called "Flow," and it was written by the late head of the Dept. of Psychology at the University of Chicago. I first read it about 30 years ago. To be brief, it's about the total immersion (and focus) in an activity that leads one to optimal experience/performance – and in the case of a hobby, pleasure. Do check it out. It really doesn't matter what you do: guitar, photography, gardening, hiking, biking, cooking, travel, exercise, road trips, bird watching, whatever. Just find and commit to something leisurely which provides pleasure, and which allows you to totally turn off the noise from your M-F 9-5 gig. You'll benefit cognitively, health-wise, and via many unforeseen ways that can't be measured. Find something and throw yourself into it. Make the commitment. Everyone has something (!) that they love to do, would love to do, don't do enough, and so on and so forth. Find your "what" and go for it. You'll add balance to your life, you might improve your health, and you might develop some new relationships. Most important: you'll have fun! I Am In It With All My Heart". - Vincent Van Gogh Teenagers often struggle to articulate their feelings,so I believe that Art can be a powerful tool to express what they are going through without words. It can also help us to understand their emotions. Self-esteem is the most misunderstood emotion in teenagers and Art work definitely provides a sense of accomplishment and can build confidence. As a parenting Coach, I believe that paintings and drawings allows the children to reduce anxiety and enter into a meditative state.. During examinations,I watched my teenaged daughter with her miniature drawings 💖 in almost every corner of the page in her notebooks. It acted as a pomodoro technique for her. As a parent, I also was uncertain, if she wasting her time.But later I realised that instead of moving around and get distracted, she used to draw sketches During her short breaks. It was in a sense a mindful escape from her monotonous study time. As a parent I believe Art and painting works as a self-expression. To overcome parental stress Art even helped me to process my emotions and relax a lot. For me oil-paintings were a non-verbal way to bond with my child. My daughter preparing for her exams preferred nights for intrinsic studies. So, one day an idea struck me that instead of getting up late during nights, I took my sketch book and started painting daily a new sketch. It further encouraged me to shift to canvas.In this way, after each month, I had a new painting to display. Now, writing this experience has helped me to see it in a different light. It is no more a painting now but a flood of memories which my child has left with me thus helping me further to overcome the empty-nest syndrome.

Olga Skoczek inspired me to share some thoughts on... hobbies. Some people collect stones, others make candles, and still others read or run. Why is it so important to have a hobby? In my second job as a therapist, I often work on resources. That is, on what the client/patient sees as their strengths. Something that is a hobby and done with passion helps bring these resources to light. Do you like to read? Maybe you have an incredible ability to focus. Or you quickly absorb information. Do you run? I can imagine that you are organized, determined, and persistent. Do you crochet? That requires patience and precision. Often people underestimate these things when they engage in a hobby. The potential that lies within them. Some of my clients/patients can't name what gives them pleasure. They underestimate "simple" things like reading or solving puzzles. But if it brings you joy, there's no need to downplay it, even if it's the simplest of activities! Because what makes you smile shows what you are really strong at and where your greatest potential lies. For example, I do scrapbooking, make jewelry, learn watercolor painting, play Magic: The Gathering and collect original My Little Pony figurines from the 80s :) What is your superpower? #Hobby #Psychology #PersonalDevelopment #Wellbeing #Passion
