In any IVF lab, the quality control aspect is critical to success, but how can you measure if your lab is functioning well? Enter the ‘Bovine Embryo Assay’ (BEA)! In some ways, it is used similarly to the Mouse Embryo Assay (MEA) conducted by clinical IVF labs and medical device manufacturers for ‘toxicity’ assessment when introducing a new product, chemical, or disposable into the lab. However, routinely performed BEA’s also gives a picture of how the lab and the embryologists are performing. The rationale for regular BEA’s is that, unlike the MEA tests, there is an enormous variability in embryo production from different bull-cow combinations. Deciphering your Day 3 embryo grades Different clinics have different ways of reporting embryo grading. A common method is to provide a grade like this for each embryo: 8c 3/2 This means “8 cells”, “grade 3 fragmentation” and “grade 2 symmetry”. (Or for some clinics it might mean “8 cells”, “grade 3 symmetry” and “grade 2 fragmentation”.) Some clinics will combine/average out the grades for fragmentation and symmetry, providing just one number. And remember: the numbers might be the other way around for your particular clinic. That is, “1” could be good instead of bad. Oh and by the way, some clinics just prefer to tell you “good”, “OK” and “a bit iffy” instead. Ask your clinic how they choose to do things.

Since it is about time for automation in IVF labs. I remember one bovine embryo cryopreservation experiment at the Benson lab at USASK. We were able to monitor the equilibration of embryo with minimal shrinkage and swelling. This could be a routine practice in embryo cryopreservation automation as different embryos would react differently to equilbration resulting in individual timing optimization for embryos to avoid excessive damage. This experiment also confirms the “fast and furious” protocol’s approach to be correct.
