World Toilet Day : November 19 Sanitation is a human right. Karimu recognizes that sanitation is of the utmost importance ---to date we have built 10 new bathrooms, for 10 schools---we have 4 more to go. Without meeting these basic needs, students cannot remain healthy and succeed. That is why on Giving Tuesday we are focusing on building school bathrooms, especially for girls. According to the United Nations: “Everyone should have access to a toilet that is secure, hygienic and private, and connected to a safely managed sanitation system to properly dispose of waste. When toilet systems are inadequate, damaged or broken, pollution spreads and deadly diseases get unleashed. For women and girls in particular, a lack of safely managed sanitation, water and hygiene services leaves them more vulnerable to abuse, attack and ill-health, affecting their ability to study, work and live in dignity. Access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene is more than a necessity; it is the foundation of hope, health, and a bright future. As the globe commemorates World Water Day and the pressing issue of the 2.2 billion people who lack access to safe water, the need to leverage water for peace resonates strongly. In accordance with Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure water and sanitation for all by 2030, CMMB intervenes to improve access to safe and reliable water sources in schools, healthcare facilities, and communities throughout Kitui South sub-county. We are pleased to provide an update on our Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project aimed at improving children's right to education in Tanzania. Supported by the Alstom Foundation and led by EWB-SWE, the project is taking important steps towards creating a healthier and more conducive learning environment. PROJECT OVERVIEW The project focuses on providing safe water access, constructing sanitation facilities, and promoting hygiene education. Our goal is to improve education for 4,700 children by addressing the critical need for reliable WASH facilities. We have successfully constructed two rainwater harvesting tanks at Ndama and Nyakabila primary schools. These tanks now benefit 772 students and 29 teachers. Ongoing Activities and plans forward: • We have completed demonstrations from UV-filter suppliers and are in the process of selecting the best solution. • Capacity Strengthening by training district council officials, teachers, and 70 students on MHH, including health education and forming school health clubs focused on WASH. • Begin building ecosan toilets and hygiene facilities, with training and advocacy activities planned for the coming months. At Splash, we understand that clean water, sanitation, and hygiene are essential for every child's success. Take Hayat, for example, a 10-year-old student from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Before Splash, her school struggled with unsafe drinking water and inadequate sanitation facilities. Today, thanks to new water stations and improved bathrooms, Hayat's school life has been transformed. Hayat is now a member of the Hygiene Club, sharing the practices she's learned with her family and classmates, helping improve health outcomes across her community. Her story illustrates the impact of clean water on education and well-being. The upcoming School Sanitation Colloquium aims to educate participants on the challenges currently facing sanitation in schools in South Africa, as well as the exciting opportunities available to address these challenges. Handwashing with soap is one of the most cost-effective and inexpensive ways to prevent disease. Promoting hygiene behavior through children has multiple benefits. It improves hygiene practices among children, who then bring these behaviors back to their families and communities. A toilet should be a secure, hygienic and private place where people can relieve themselves in dignity and safety - and it should be connected to a safely managed sanitation system to properly dispose of waste. 🚽🚽🚽 There is 3.5 billion people still living without safely managed sanitation, including 419 million who practise open defecation. On this #World ToiletDay 2024, Government and Development Partners should pool funds together on having improved in HCFs, Schools and Public places. More investment and better governance of sanitation in all settings are critical for a fairer, more peaceful world #Toiletaplaceforpeace
