🌟 We really enjoyed reading this article about Andrew Davies' experience of being diagnosed as being autistic as an adult at age 70, by Nicola Bryan. 💫 Andrew describes his experience of being autistic as..."It's just who I am and how my brain is wired... how I experience the world is just different". ✨ Many autistic people may be able to relate the feeling that the way that they think about things seems a little different to many people around them. A neurodivergent way of thinking can allow people to see the world in a way that other people cannot. At times in can be an incredible asset and Andrew has had a long and successful career working as a minister for 10 years in the Welsh government and an assembly member for Swansea West. Although having a dedicated interest on some topics may have been advantageous, Andrew also refers to the challenges that he faced, including potential burnouts throughout his life, and how he now has a different understanding of his experiences. Our hope is that over time, access to assessment, support, and a true understanding of what it means to be neurodivergent continues to progress.

If you want to take a journey into the 'how' of making the space more equitable, aligned and positive for everyone, then do connect in with Jonathan Drury. The Dialogica approach is about the powerful and necessary conversations we need to have, to create the space for every human to feel they belong, are heard and valued for who they are. Find out more, here ⬇️
The advent of Autism has presented some uncomfortable truths about the way we all help each other. Over the past decade as a coach and facilitator, I’ve worked with hundreds of people across the neurodiversity spectrum, during which, I’ve seen a shift from viewing autism as a fixed label and category to an opportunity to explore what selfhood (autos) means! I developed the Autism Dialogue Approach to address this shift, which emphasises reframing autism as a conversation for learning, instead of a problem, and fosters inclusive, growth-oriented relationships. And I've just created a new document for health professionals - therapists, coaches and psychologists included - which explains the philosophy, principles and practical applications, and includes some strategies to start bridging the neurotypical gap right away. Dr. Lisa Marnell asks: "How do you support autistic children when its comes to emotional regulation?" I can support the co-regulation of autistic children (and/or adults) by creating a space of emotional and physical safety: - Saying "I am here with you. You are safe. We will do this together." - "We can take as long as we need to slow things down together." - "Breathing really fast sometimes means we need to slow things down." - "Watch me breath in through my nose and out through my mouth" - "You can hold my hand, hug me, put your hand on my/your heart" - "We/I can sing your favorite song" Non-destructive stim behaviors (e.g., tapping, rocking) can be a good way to help the child and/or adult you are with regulate. Offer fidgets, body rollers, etc, when you are co-regulating with them.
In order to attend, to engage, to learn, and to enjoy life, any child must feel emotionally regulated. Kids must find safety in their environment and comfort and predictability with the people and the expectations before them. When an autistic child feels distressed to the point of emotional dysregulation, we must co-regulate and support them. Our first job is to help kids' parasympathetic (calming and regulating) nervous systems kick in, so they shift back to a more comfortable and relaxed state. Our second very important job is to support them as they learn about their own emotions and as they master how to better understand themselves and to cope in the day to day. This week I was interviewed by Disability Cornwall who are putting together some training for the Fire Service. Their purpose is to help the fire service to better understand how they can support Autistic people in an emergency situation, without causing further dis-regulation or trauma. They were speaking to me specifically to learn more about what it’s like to have a PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidant) profile. PDA is better explained by reframing the acronym to a ‘Persistent Drive for Autonomy’. This is driven by extreme anxiety where the brain becomes automatically triggered into the flight/flight/freeze response when their is a loss or even a perceived loss of autonomy. In the PDA brain there is no perceived hierarchy where others are concerned but the PDA brain needs to feel in control. It’s not so much the demand but the expectation of the demand that causes the brain to become triggered and that includes internal and societal expectations. The anxiety reaction is less likely to be triggered where there is a trusted, equal relationship but even then every request must have a logical purpose and a mutually agreed timeframe. So in an emergency situation where the fire service are there to assist you, take charge, and give you direction to keep you safe, the PDA brain will be triggered and the autistic person is likely to react in an aggressive or inappropriate manner. Just understanding that this profile exists is the first step and will go a long way in learning how to better support us. Oh and of course I happened to be wearing my ‘Aloha KaKou 🤙 T-Shirt. #autism #PDA #disability

If you are working with autistic children, it is likely that you are working with individuals that will, at points, be using autistic masking. This refers to the conscious or unconscious suppression or hiding of elements of a person’s autistic identity. Transitions can be challenging for children of all ages, whether they are autistic or neurotypical. Developing consistent and effective transition strategies not only enables kids to get on with their day and to shift from task to task as needed, but smooth transitions cultivate their emotional regulation overall. No child wants to feel upset and dysregulated for any amount of time. As we work to co-regulate our kids - helping them transition happily from task to task - we are supporting development of their self-regulation. As they experience more positive transitions, they will feel calmer and more safe in home and school environments. And this builds a foundation of joy and meaning in their lives! #occupationaltherapy #SBOT #schoolbasedoccupationaltherapist #schoolbasedot #autismparent #preschoolteacher #earlychildhoodeducation #earlyintervention #sensoryprocessingdisorder #selfregulation #occupationaltherapyassistant #transitions #autismparent #autismfamilysupport #autismmom #autismteachersofinstagram #preschoolteachersofinstagram #kindergardenteacher #copingstrategies #specialeducation #spedteacher #spedtribe #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #emotionalregulation #westlakevillagemoms #thousandoaksmoms
