🌿 Excited to share that the work Andrés Melendez & I did has been featured in Forbes! The report highlights a significant issue in climate financing known as the "missing middle". This gap is a major obstacle to the timely global development and deployment of climate solutions, a delay that the world can ill-afford. Global climate finance has made incredible strides, quadrupling over the last decade to reach $1.4 trillion or 1% of global GDP in 2022. However, much of the private climate capital is flowing into venture capital and infrastructure funds, leaving a notable lack of growth equity and private equity capital needed to scale proven climate solutions. Addressing this "missing middle" is essential to push climate technologies past the tipping point, achieving rapid market adoption similar to solar and batteries. Strategic investments in this space are required to unlock new value pools across sectors and accelerate the transition to net zero. 🌎 You can read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gXHUBTWf
We're thrilled to share that our latest report, "Understanding The Climate Finance Gap," has been featured in Forbes! Writer, Rob Day, highlighted our report's compelling data, especially on the critical funding gap at the "missing middle" stage, and wrote that he would encourage “every investor with interest in climate solutions” to check out our report. We found that 60% of critical climate technologies are ready for commercial scaling. Yet there remains a need to push technologies across all climate sectors past the “tipping point” where costs reduce significantly. Scaling these technologies will not only mitigate emissions but also unlock new value pools across sectors estimated to be as large as $12trn annually, providing opportunities for private market investors. Great column by my colleague Rob Day with the key take aways and his own analysis from CREO Syndicates latest research on gaps in the market for climate finance that we need to fill: the "missing middle" is a real problem / opportunity, there are many climate solutions that are mature enough to deploy but not enough $ to do it (and we are still using too much expensive equity to deploy them), many funds that say that invest in climate mostly do not, and we are under investing in alot of the sectors the the biggest mitigation potential. For more on those take aways and additional market analysis read below!
I wrote about this terrific new CREO report on climate investing. Check out their report, it's chock-full of great data and insights.

Climate infrastructure investing is essential for our energy transition. ⚡️ While VC and PE focus on commercializing and scaling earlier-stage technologies and innovations, infrastructure supports the deployment of mature climate technologies at a global scale. Read more about the importance of an infrastructure rollout in the fight against climate change, the investment opportunity it represents and the different types of infrastructure projects. Entrepreneurship 101: What do you need to go from early-stage to commercial scale? 1. Catalytic Capital: Critical for de-risking projects and attracting traditional capital, helping bridge the financial gap for scaling climate technologies. 2. Project Expertise: Companies need operational expertise, not just funding, to implement successful projects. 3. Community Partnership: Authentic collaboration with local communities is essential for impactful and equitable deployment. You checked all three of the above boxes, and yet you haven't gotten atop the "J" curve or hockey stick, what now? Well, If yours is a climate company, now there's a fund for that! Through strategic deployment of a portion of the $27billion (Yes! Billion) Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (#GGRF) - portion of the #InflationReductionAct, Elemental Impact is driving climate solutions to large-scale, community-focused project deployments via Project Financing. By combining catalytic capital, operational expertise, and community partnerships, Elemental is helping projects reduce emissions while benefiting underserved areas. Kudos Dawn Lippert & the team at Elemental Impact This approach not only de-risks investments but also ensures impactful projects are successfully implemented, accelerating progress toward a net-zero future. #ClimateAction #ImpactInvestment #GGRF #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability 🔗 Learn more about Elemental’s work>

A very useful piece on the state of climate tech investment. Green SPACs are all but dead and large corporates including Shell emerged as the most plausible exit for climate venture investment. Seed funding especially in sustainable transport remained resilient. Interestingly, the startups are not immune to project management issues that are usually seen as a big corporate issue, venture funded projects are also plagued by cost overruns.
In the lead up to our “Scaling Climate Tech – Industry & Investor Perspectives from Fusion” event during NYC Climate Week with the Fusion Industry Association on September 23rd, we’re revisiting recent work. Climate tech has emerged as the most exciting pillar of the energy transition and is poised to capture additional market share.
