Recently, we recognized #NationalMentoringDay and if you know me, you know that mentorship is one of my greatest passions. Mentorship was one of the driving forces behind founding AEC Unites and why I serve on the board of the ACE Mentor Program of America. As a leader in the #AEC industry, I’ve seen firsthand how mentorship and hands-on experiences shape the future of our field. At McKissack & McKissack, we take pride in our deep culture of mentorship and learning, fostering talent at every level. At the end of the summer, Zachary Anderson, an University of Virginia Urban Planning major, shared how his time at McKissack & McKissack helped him gain practical skills and gave him insight into how this industry works. His growth reflects our commitment to nurturing young talent. My hope is that you’ll make time to take on a mentee or seek out a mentor. The next generation of AEC leaders is already here; we just need to nurture that talent and help them find their way. One area we worked on during the summer was helping our underclass students stay on track for graduation. Therefore, leveraging technology was an effective strategy to mitigate our students’ summer slide. During my #dissertation research, I investigated the #professionaldevelopment (or lack thereof) available to #principals in many #districts, and I explored why so many principals leave the profession at alarming rates. According to research, most districts say they are providing PD for principal development, yet mainly provide instruction centered around district initiatives. At the time I was researching principal PD, I was unaware of the Principal Impact Collaborative (PIC). Now, as a PIC fellow, I can confidently say that PIC is at the forefront of principal retention efforts. Principals need comprehensive support for the wide range of responsibilities they are expected to manage. To meet these demands, we must develop healthy, personal and professional habits and cultivate self-awareness. I learned about PIC at a highly critical moment in my career. Five years into the principalship, I personally find PIC to be a game-changer for my own development—exactly the support I need. If you are a principal, I highly recommend looking into PIC. It will transform how you approach your role and equip you with sustainable, effective solutions.
