🗣️ Yesterday evening I dropped out of 7 aside to attend a brilliant event at HelloFresh, discussing pressing issues surrounding the ever-changing topic of diversity and inclusion. It was great to see so many familiar friends and faces. Often when it comes to DEI, it’s an uncomfortable conversation because the truth hurts ❌ Yesterday’s panel provided plenty of key discussion points, challenges and insight into their views on how we can shape a better DEI landscape for the future. We uncovered the below: 💎 Emerging Trends for 2024 💎 The benefits & costs of a robust DEI policy 💎 What do organisations miss out on by not investing in DEI 💎 How to influence decision-makers to take DEI seriously and showcase value add and ROI. What really impressed me is: 👉🏾 The volume of people who share the same passion and commitment towards making workplaces better through DEI, but as expected face very similar challenges.  👉🏾 We all felt similar challenges and frustrations, but the one key takeaway for me is, we all want to add value starting with reflecting the values we want to uphold. It has to start somewhere. Key Takeaways: 💥 DEI isn’t just an initiative or problem solver. It’s a responsibility shared by everyone within a business, community, industry etc.  💥 The only way we will see positive change is by having uncomfortable conversations, NOT cutting DEI budgets, actually prioritising investment for a diverse workforce and understanding value and ROI is a LONG-TERM gain.  💥 Understand that what works for you might not work for another business, you have to be true to your values and take action. 💥 There’s no quick fix. If there was we’d all be doing it. 🤷♂️ Talking isn’t enough: Remember just because DEI is on the agenda doesn’t mean it’s being spoken about correctly. 🤷♂️ Action > Words: Everyone says they’re passionate about DEI until you ask them what they’ve implemented. You’re not proving whether your opinion is right or wrong to the business—there should be no ego involved. It's about testing your hypothesis and gaining insights. Is there value in your feature? Can experimenting with your features highlight opportunities to increase value or reduce costs? Experimentation results are either winners or learners. Experimentation winners that don’t get implemented are missed opportunities. Your roadmap should allow for some flexibility based on these results. Winners may not have approval from all parties. Alignment is crucial before running the experiment. Experiments don’t immediately generate revenue; they return insights, which in turn lead to revenue generation. I am really enjoying seeing everyone's different highlights and takeaways from the Shoptalk Europe talks so here we go with mine! Part 1 - - Lars-Johan Jarnheimer, Chairman at Ingka Group had some great thoughts on leadership and how simplicity needs to start in the boardroom. I particularly loved their Go Bananas card for great ideas and the advice people need to dare to make mistakes as it increases the level of agility. The same runs true with test and learn mindsets, you cannot be afraid to fail. It is a test for a reason! - Jie Cheng （程捷）from Mondelēz International- Sharing her thoughts that in 5 years time omni-integration whorls be complete and that personalisation should be paramount. I also loved thinking about unified commerce in its simplicity and how brands and retailers can create a unified experience together thinking about these three things: 1. How evolved if the consumer in that market? 2. How evolved is the technology in that market? 3. How evolved are the media capabilities in that market? This is the same thinking that we apply with our Mars United Commerce Retail Media Report Card. - The conversation between Bonnie Szucs, Gaurav Goel and Jie Cheng （程捷）also highlighted the huge shift and changes large FMCG's are having to make within their organisations to ensure they are unified, not just in their commerce marketing but in their internal organisations too. Whereas smaller challenger brands are getting to leapfrog over some of these legacy challenges which gives them the power of agility. -Jordan Berke from TOMORROW and Gregor Ulitzka from Ocado Group had an interesting discussion around the importance of thinking about insight into the life of your customer. Don’t just think about their online journey, think about everything we know about them and then use that to help and delight them.
