Delighted to deliver another lecture at KLC School of Design last week. This time at their new premises in town (as opposed to at Chelsea Design Centre). First visit there for me and I can confirm they have got plenty of stairs (the lift was out of action when I arrived!) As ever, the session was lively and conversational, lots of great questions taking the subject matter to new and interesting places including…. How can designers and decorating companies like Paint The Town Green work together best? Colour matching, how does it work? Is it a good idea? What are the pros and cons around it? Saying no to clients! How being the villain at the start on the project and the hero at the end is vastly preferable to the other way around. Communicating clear parameters around what will and won’t be happening during the project may be an uncomfortable conversation at the time, but it could be the difference between a successful and an unsuccessful project. Do you delight the client now with an easy “yes”, or later with the vastly more challenging (and rewarding) successful project? One student asked what to do if a client goes onto a site and instructs changes directly to the working contractors without consultation with the interior designer or having the work formally costed? We then agreed that this probably wouldn’t happen if the designer had advised them about communication pathways at the start of the job. Like so many things in life, it’s all about communicating clear parameters at the start.
