Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jay Mahardale, the principal of Northland Primary, along with his leadership team, which includes Vice Principals Mr. Richard Chong and Mrs. Gina Cho. Our conversation was enlightening, as we delved into their vision for the school and their commitment to fostering a nurturing and dynamic educational environment. We discussed how the integration of AI into our educational practices stands at a crossroads, presenting us with both remarkable opportunities and significant challenges. With a measured and thoughtful approach, we can leverage AI to nurture each student’s unique potential, helping them grow, serve and excel. This requires a commitment to ensuring that AI is implemented ethically and effectively, always keeping the human essence of education at the forefront. As we navigate this new terrain, it's essential to embrace AI's potential to craft a more personalized and effective learning experience. AI can revolutionize how we understand and respond to individual student needs, providing tailored support that fosters deeper understanding and skill development. However, we must remain acutely aware of the accompanying risks. If not managed wisely, AI could inadvertently widen existing educational disparities and lead to over-reliance on technology, undermining the critical human interactions that are foundational to learning. Our mission, therefore, is clear. We must harness AI's capabilities to empower students, helping them not just to face the future but to thrive within it. This path requires our collective wisdom and vigilance to ensure that AI enhances educational equity and fosters independence rather than dependence. The decisions we make today will shape the educational landscape of tomorrow, determining whether AI becomes a powerful tool for empowerment and growth or a catalyst for inequality and stagnation. The stakes are high, but with careful stewardship, the future of education can be bright and inclusive. Overall, the leadership at Northland Primary, under the guidance of Mr. Mahardale and his vice principals, Mr. Chong and Mrs. Cho, is truly exemplary. Their collective vision and unwavering commitment to education promise a bright future for the students of Northland Primary.

There's a new group of faculty on our campus who are undermining student success goals like Georgia State University's President Brian Blake's "Four Pillars" initiative. They are AI-Luddites, and they are so afraid of #GAI that they will sacrifice all the progress we have made in the past 20 years. #AI #GAI #AIinEducation #GSU #teachingandlearning

Generative AI (GenAI) is quickly transforming higher education, creating an opportunity for Ontario’s PSE sector to reimagine how it supports student success. Doing so will require collaboration between students, faculty, departments and institutions, which includes engaging in ongoing dialogue and sharing best practices. It will also require increased clarity and awareness around how students and staff can use GenAI to make learning more accessible, as well as under what circumstances the use of these tools is permissible. HEQCO conducted a study to determine how GenAI can be used to make learning more accessible for all students, including those with disabilities, and the barriers to its use faced by students, instructors and staff in PSE. HEQCO surveyed over 500 Ontario students about their experiences with GenAI and interviewed eleven support staff from nine publicly assisted colleges and universities in the province. Find out what we learned in our latest report. https://lnkd.in/eNyUrFZ9

Writing for the Higher Education Policy Institute's recent publication Professor Kathleen Armour of UCL says, in her piece on the risks and challenges of AI in higher education; "AI is here to stay and education in higher education will have to adopt, adapt, collaborate and lead ... we need to ensure that higher education pedagogies and processes are keeping up while retaining a critical eye on the risks. Yet, as noted earlier, ChatGPT and similar tools have the potential to offer students access to new forms of learning assessment support. If we collaborate with AI developers to address the challenges, our students and the sector have much to gain. "The Future of Education"—What an incredible topic to discuss recently at Melbourne Connect (University of Melbourne), surrounded by innovative thought leaders from education, business, and government. I am incredibly grateful to have been invited to share my thoughts and learn alongside such inspiring and diverse minds. Eduard Hovy facilitated rich discussions, engaging us in the topic of Generative AI in education. We considered the impact and changes needed to improve Indigenous knowledge, Instructional Methods, Learning with Generative AI, Assessment, Engagement, and Teaching to shape what the future of education could be. Our discussions included how Generative AI will transform student learning and teaching practices, the importance of human intelligence and innovation as sustainable foci in a changing world, how we adapt teaching practices, the skills our students will need, and rethinking assessment to shift from tests to portfolios. We also emphasised learning from Indigenous knowledge to strengthen our educational direction, and the power of student agency and autonomy. The challenges of equity within a broken education system that is difficult to shift were also addressed, and how essential it is to change this system so it is relevant, inclusive, and accessible – how can we make this possible? These moments build the momentum needed to lead us toward improving education for generations to come. Thank you to everyone involved, including the amazing staff at Melbourne Connect, who made this experience outstanding. I look forward with optimism to experience where this takes us next. #education #futureofeducation #inspiringminds #thoughtleaders #edreform #edumazing #AIineducation #GenerativeAI

My two biggest takeaways from last week’s Conference on Higher Education Pedagogy (CHEP) at Virginia Tech: the AI imperative in higher education, and the opportunity to create fearless learning environments. On AI, we heard how: 1. Higher education has between 5-10 years before AI can achieve 100% human replication – we have some time to react and embrace AI, but not a lot 2. So far, AI has provoked one of two responses among most academics: panic and over-reacting to the hype, or ignorance and hoping it will not impact us 3. The AI landscape is changing so fast that the most sensible response at this stage is for each of us to start our AI exploration and journey immediately – use free tools (there are tons!), become AI-literate and digitally-fluent, and begin to introduce AI-related content and exercises into our classes 4. Many thanks to Dale Pike and the many AI-focused speakers for such stimulating, thought-provoking presentations! On fearless classrooms, we heard how: 1. 80% of the population has an educational “shame story”. In my case, I counted at least 6 of my elementary and high school teachers who told me I would never successfully learn a specific subject or skill 2. The prevailing mindset among students graduating from high school is that 100% is “perfect” and anything less is a “mistake”, and therefore something to fear. In contrast, universities expect students to immediately engage in critical thinking where there may not be a “right” answer – an intimidating mindset shift that university instructors must facilitate 3. As university instructors, we have the opportunity to reframe fear and failure. We should try to get students to say “I’m not there yet, but I can get there (with my instructor’s help)” instead of “I’m afraid of failure and I don’t want to study this material anymore” 4. Many thanks to Catherine Denial Denial and Amy Johnson for their ground-breaking thinking on this critical topic! Many thanks to Catherine Amelink and the entire Virginia Tech Center of Excellence in Teaching and Learning team for such an inspiring program - can’t wait until next year! #chep #virginiatech #ai #businesseducation #universityeducation
