I'm here with my GHD colleagues in Baku, Azerbaijan, for #COP29. Reflecting on my experience across the various COPs since #COP25 in Madrid, Spain, it’s clear that the conversations have evolved, continuously pushing boundaries and demanding swifter action.   Recently, a report from UNEP highlighted a critical issue: developing nations need nearly $1 billion each day to cope with the impacts of extreme weather, yet they currently receive only around $75 million daily — less than 10% of what’s necessary. When you factor their needs for mitigative and adaptive action, the push for greater transparency and for the sums pledged to reach their targets, it really highlights how important it is that we resolve this aspect of the climate process as soon as possible.   Given this context, it’s apt that this year’s UN Climate Change Conference is dedicated to closing the finance gap. #COP29 is a pivotal moment for all stakeholders to unite and address one of the most complex challenges in #mitigation and #adaptation.   Watch my report from COP29 below for an in-depth look at what’s happening on the sidelines of the negotiations. As we prepare for COP 29 later this year, the COP 29 Presidency has set a bold vision: to enhance ambition and enable action, with climate finance as the top priority. Ambition means keeping the 1.5°C goal within reach while ensuring no one is left behind, guided by the principles of the Paris Agreement. Action entails providing the necessary tools—finance, technology, and capacity-building—at every level to drive real change globally. YES-DC is Heading to #COP29 in Azerbaijan 🌏 COP29 for this year will be holding from 11th to 22nd of November riding on the slogan "In Solidarity for a Green World." The main discussion will be centered around Climate Finance, however other issues such as Climate Justice, Loss and Damage will form part of the conversation. These are issues on the front burners of building a sustainable future that supports vulnerable communities and drives equitable solutions. As a youth-driven organization clamouring for a just transition, we are eager to witness these pivotal discussions and bring back valuable insights to our network. What were some key outcomes agreed at COP29 Azerbaijan? 🔊 Overall many commentators said there was a distinct lack of focus on #Nature and agriculture and more needs to be done to incorporate nature protection and restoration into national climate plans. Nature4Climate coordinated a letter signed by Business for Nature and more than 100 others including companies and Indigenous Peoples organizations calling for UNFCCC Parties to properly recognize and finance nature’s role in addressing the climate crisis, or risk undermining global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5C. In a recent article, Carbon Brief provides an in-depth analysis of all the key outcomes in Baku – both inside and outside the COP. Co-authored by Aruna Chandrasekhar, Ayesha Tandon, Daisy Dunne, Giuliana Viglione, Josh Gabbatiss, Molly Lempriere, Orla Dwyer, Simon Evans, and Wanyuan Song, the analysis explores: 🌎 Formal negotiations, such as an agreement being reached on carbon trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. 🌎 An agreement to commence the third periodic review of the long-term global goal of the UN climate regime and to continue discussions at #COP30 next year. 🌎 Global leaders and country pledges, where some 80 heads of state attended #COP29’s World Leaders Climate Action Summit, the high-level segment of the talks. 🌎 That despite #NatureDay on 21 November, where Environment Minister Marina Silva emphasized the role of trees in tackling environmental and social challenges, the COP29 presidency’s action agenda did not mention #Deforestation or land-use change. The #EuropeanClimatePact gives us a few ideas to get started at https://lnkd.in/eu8-zsRE The importance of positive examples and stories to catalyze action and raise ambition cannot be understated. Why not showcase sustainable practices from your neighborhood or your own projects and initiatives and jointly seek ways to replicate and scale them up? While our hearts are with the people in southern and eastern Spain affected by the devastating floods just a few days ago, scientists are telling us that such extreme weather events are exacerbated by climate change and will continue to grow in frequency and intensity as global temperature rises. However, the commitments that national governments have made so far to curb climate change are still insufficient: this year’s synthesis report by the UNFCCC secretariat shows that current national climate plans (NDCs) are still dangerously off-track to avert the crippling effects of climate change. https://lnkd.in/ey97abKW Local action by civil society is crucial to drive governments to raise the level of ambition of their national climate plans or NDCs (nationally determined contribution under the Paris Agreement). By 2025, countries are to update their NDC and raise their level of ambition - the UNFCCC COP 30 in Brazil next year will be the moment of truth. I had the privilege to be part of the civil society organizations present at the UNFCCC #COP21 in Paris back in 2015 when the #Paris Agreement was approved. It was a beautiful historic moment when leaders in government and in the multilateral negotiation process, with strong presence and support from civil society, including sub-national governments, were united in calling for a global agreement on climate. It was the culmination of a long arduous path and work by many people, organizations and governments across the globe… it was magnificent! In the path to #COP30, we need to build this momentum again and more, or we will all loose to the dangerous impacts of climate change. 🌍While globally the rollout of solutions continues to grow, we are failing to keep pace with the climate and nature crises, and trends continue to head in the wrong direction. 🦋This year, the climate COP falls just a week after the biodiversity COP has concluded in Colombia, and it is now more important than ever that world leaders take an integrated approach to nature and climate to accelerate action for a sustainable future. 🗳️Finding common ground at COP29 Azerbaijan will be more challenging than ever given the continued growth in populist and nationalist politics, political instability, with key election outcomes yet to be announced, and significant intergovernmental tensions. ➡️However, this COP presents a crucial opportunity to bring together global efforts on climate change and to send a clear signal about the scale and speed of action required. ⏰Now is the time to act. Another day ☀️Another certification✅ All glory to God 🙏🏾 Find out how to get yours ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 🍃Care About Climate did a thing👌🏾✨ As a climate justice advocate who understands the importance of high level meetings and international gatherings where global decisions are made, it is imperative that you are equipped with all the information and knowledge you can get. 🍃In preparation for #COP29, I took the ICPAC COP29 course and it was more than I could have imagined. It covered UNFCCC processes, COP, an overview of climate change and climate justice with respect to every country and so on. To name a few take-aways; 🐬 #COP29 is often reffered to as the finance COP, 🐬 Not all countries bear the same responsibility for climate action whereby developed countries would provide financial support dependent on climate contributions, 🐬Africa has the least contributions to climate emissions but most affected by climate change as it is warming more than the rest of the world, 🐬 Ensuring sustainable ocean management and Some solutions using oceans include shutting down offshore oil and gas, using renewable ocean energy, decarbonization of ships and fishing sectors etc are relevant methods to mitigate climate change, 🐬 At least 2456 fossil fuel lobbyists were granted access to #COP28 and they were instrumental in advocating for fossil phase down instead of a phase out. 🐬 Women and children are most vulnerable and affected by climate change particularly black women, indigenous women and women of color. 🌎We’re hoping to see a lot of changes at #COP this year including enhanced transparency (all delegates are advised to share their affiliations), inclusion of SIDs, vulnerable countries, marginalized groups, just transition initiatives, climate finance and funding for adaptation goals especially in vulnerable communities. 🌎I am particularly interested in these thematic areas; ACE, health, gender, Justice transition and loss and damage. 🤔I’m interested in them all! We're 5 days into COP16 Colombia 🌎 . The latest news from the end of day 5 is that Colombian Environment Minister and COP16 Colombia President Susana Muhamad reported 'VERY GOOD PROGRESS' in UN biodiversity talks to date. She added that 'A LOT OF WORK HAD ADVANCED DURING THE WEEK'. But as well as the hard talk between nation advisors, there has been a lot of activity in the fringes with over 23,000 delegates now expected in Cali over the two weeks and many of that number are business representatives from across the globe. Why does this matter? Well, like in Glasgow in 2021 at the Climate COP26, a record number of businesses attended that COP and it proved to be real catalyst for business in addressing climate risk and focussing on climate action within a business context. FSB Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) was the key regulatory framework then, much as Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) is the focus and main regulatory framework now, for this COP. Government agreement is absolutely critical but it is through business that climate action and implementation will be delivered effectively on the ground and COULD be delivered at speed. It's an uncomfortable truth, but business is both the greatest challenge and greatest opportunity to addressing climate change.
