🇸🇮 Ljubljana has has shown that a sustainable and livable city center is not only possible but also beneficial for both the economy and quality of life. 🚶♂️🌳 In 2007, Mayor Zoran Janković faced skepticism for his bold vision of reducing car traffic in the heart of the city. The results have been impressive, earning #Ljubljana the title of Europe’s Green Capital in 2016 for its achievements in ecological urban development. ➡️ 620% increase in pedestrian zones ➡️ 70% reduction in emissions ➡️ A boom in visitors and residents Despite some concerns that fewer cars would hurt local businesses, shops are now busier than ever. Ljubljana’s success lies in its investment in green infrastructure: bike lanes, bike-sharing, public transportation, and solutions like electric mini-shuttles for people with limited mobility. In the United States 🇺🇸, many cities remain car-dominated. The potential for a similar transformation is huge: cities could adopt an improved multimodal transport system where micro-EVs, including 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘀, play a key role. 🔋 What can cities like #NewYork learn from Ljubljana’s model to foster a more sustainable and "human-centric" urban environment?

Imagine a safe, sustainable city without car dominance. I came across, together with Daniel Bumann an inspiring poster in Biel, Switzerland and I looked it up. The website is available in German and French and it describes many of the solutions for "How do we get there?" - the vision for car-free cities. The vibrant and inspiring illustrated map (same as the front page) links the solutions for sustainable city, from 15-minute city to car-pooling and so on. You can explore the solutions on the website here: https://lnkd.in/dz-6KTAQ And if you are local, you can also order the poster and support the campaign "The traffic future begins now. Let's rebuild our transport system - towards sustainable mobility. We want to reduce dependence on motorized individual transport and promote environmentally friendly forms of transport. We have to massively reduce traffic without restricting our mobility. We can't help but question existing structures: from street space to our values, fundamental changes are needed." #Biel

💡📚 MED COLOURS' suggested readings for a more resilient and sustainable #UrbanLogistics! ✨ 👉🏼 What advantages can #CargoBikes bring for #UrbanDistribution? 📦 ✅ In recent years, Cargo Bikes have emerged as champions of #LastMileDelivery, reshaping Urban Logistics and enabling a significant step towards cleaner, greener and more resilient cities. The integration of these vehicles, which are clearly more sustainable than traditional last mile delivery vans and enable a more efficient use of space in urban logistics, represents a new era for companies that want to optimise their operations and reduce their environmental impact. ❗ However, the challenges are considerable: without a coherent national framework, municipalities struggle with complex regulations and infrastructural constraints. To try to respond to these issues, Arup and Tour de Force, drawing upon real-world case studies in #Rotterdam, have produced the report ‘Space for Cargo Bikes’, a guide offering practical insights into how cities can successfully integrate cargo bikes into their urban logistics environment. 🔍 A brief summary of the report and the full report are available here: https://lnkd.in/esE64KAd 👉🏻 Solutions such as Cargo Bikes and alternative and more sustainable #Delivery methods, which can make urban logistics more efficient and sustainable, will also be tested in the #MEDCOLOURSProject. 🎯 #MEDCOLOURS involves 6 cities (Livorno, Cesena, Thessaloniki, Koper, Lisbon, and Lyon) in the implementation of 5 #PilotActions and 6 #SustainableUrbanLogisticsPlans, with the objective of upscaling towards a new generation of logistics and urban planning that allows the transition towards decarbonised and smart cities. ℹ️ Find out more about our project: 🌐 https://lnkd.in/dVt-PCmS

More lanes won't fix our cities. Not even greener cars. Our cities need more car-less drivers! Next time, try to get around like this: 1. walk 2. bike 3. public transport 4. private cars We know in some cities, it's just not possible. We would be afraid to bike in Prague. Sustainable mobility unlocks top-down: It's 98% about urban planning! Agree? PS: How are you getting to work tomorrow? Let us know in the comments!

Sustainable mobility depends largely on urban planning, which should prioritize non-car options. Some cities may not be ideal for biking due to safety, but improving infrastructure can help. Developing mixed-use neighborhoods for people to live, work, and shop in one area, in addition creating green corridors for walking and biking are excellent solutions. These approaches not only reduce traffic congestion but also improve the overall quality of urban living.

🛣️❌Road widening is often seen as a quick fix to ease traffic congestion. However, this approach has repeatedly proven ineffective, as it merely reinforces car dependency, which ultimately increases congestion and travel times. To create sustainable transport systems, in both urban and rural areas, we must shift our focus from reactive measures like road widening to proactive and strategic transport planning. A car-centric approach to urban planning only deepens the problem whereas sustainable transit solutions can enhance urban mobility, reduce pollution, and improve the overall quality of life. Effective transport planning considers the unique needs of each region, accounting for factors like population, demographics, employment opportunities and resources. 🌍🌱The solution lies in tailored, context-specific solutions that provide adequate infrastructure to encourage cycling and walking, improve access to public transport, and support the transition to EVs where necessary. It is access to the right infrastructure in right locations that empowers people to make greener transportation choices and reduce reliance on cars where possible. While urban planning concepts that revolve around mixed-use neighbourhoods, 15-minute cities, and liveable neighbourhoods may work well in some areas, it is crucial to recognize that transport planning must be 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻. A one-size-fits-all approach won't work. Instead, flexible, locally adapted policies can prioritize 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 based on local conditions, ensuring that both urban and rural areas receive the appropriate solutions to meet their distinct challenges. #policy #urbanmobility #activecommunities #infrastructure #accessibility

In the heart of Europe’s cities, the hum of movement tells a complex story. Narrow cobblestone streets blend with sleek bike lanes, while tram bells compete with the whispers of electric cars. Residents cherish the old-world charm but wrestle with 21st-century demands for speed and sustainability. 🇮🇹 Imagine a commuter in Milan, caught between an overburdened metro and the lure of a scooter-share app. 🇳🇱 Or a tourist in Amsterdam, marveling at its bike-first infrastructure yet frustrated by its limits during peak hours. 🇫🇷 In Paris, innovation is palpable. Dedicated bus lanes and urban e-scooters promise progress; but, met with debates over equity and safety. This evolving narrative is both inspiring and daunting. European cities are at the forefront of global mobility innovation, yet challenges persist. Balancing history and modernity, equity and efficiency, sustainability and convenience is no small feat. The question is no longer whether change is happening, but how these cities can adapt gracefully. With each step, pedal, or charge, the vision of connected, greener cities becomes clearer. Yet, the road ahead remains uncertain; filled with opportunities to redefine movement and reshape how we live.
