Every family deserves to travel safely and comfortably during the holidays, but for under-resourced families, it can be difficult to obtain critical gear items like strollers, car seats, and cribs. As I walk around Sacred Heart Home, I come across staff sleeping all the time. It’s endearing to me because I know that they’ve been on their feet all day or are in the middle of a double shift. These incredible #healthcare workers find ways to sleep in the locker room, curled on a bench, head against the wall in the dining room, or eating a lunch in two minutes so they have maximum amount of time to simply put their head on the table in the staff lounge. As a fundraiser, their exhaustion motivates me to raise the funds needed for our new facility, to hire more staff, and to have the monies available for continuing education and further training. I wouldn’t get this motivation if I stayed in my office, however. It’s a reminder that if you are a fundraiser at a college, for example, get out of the admin building and head over to the student union or even the classrooms. If you are fundraising for a hospital, get to the floors or even the emergency room. If you are raising funds for a homeless shelter, spend some time with those in the shelter. We are told, as fundraisers, that we should spend a percentage of time out of the office, with donors. To most of us, a bed is something that we cozy into each night... for the families that we are serving, this is something that they cannot even imagine, that they would be able to get off the floor and into a bed. Beds are one of the most critical items we provide, bringing comfort, security, and dignity to families emerging from crisis. Right now, we have a backlog of families who desperately need beds—a place for their children to sleep safely and comfortably. If you were to visit our warehouse today, you’d see rows of beds, but here’s the reality: every single one of them is already spoken for. We're grateful for the generous donations we receive, but the need far outweighs what we currently have. For the past 15 years, I have been a member of Denver Children's Foundation and for president of this non-profit. Christmas for Kids is our largest and most important fundraising event of the year. We raise money for disadvantaged youth in Denver and the surrounding counties. This year, we will provide a memorable holiday experience for over 150 children who face significant challenges. These kids will have the opportunity to shop for gifts for their families, and they’ll end the day with a special visit from Santa arriving by helicopter! It’s a magical experience that brings joy and hope to our community. My goal is to raise $15,000 for C4K. I reach that goal not only with a significant donation from me but from the help of all of you. There is no amount to small to donate. Although, I strongly encourage you to do the $1,000 option. The thought of children missing out on the magic of the season due to economic challenges is a stark reminder of the inequalities that persist, even during this time of celebration. That's why I stand behind Action for Children, an organisation dedicated to ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, can experience the joy and wonder of Christmas.
