Huge Thank You to our amazing Who I Am Foundation #volunteers in #Albuquerque who came out to Saturday morning's Community Clean-Up project! Our volunteers picked up over 4 BAGS of trash at Tingley Beach, in a little over 2 hours! Showcasing the impact you can make in the community by simply volunteering 1-2 hours a week. These Community Clean-Up projects are conducted each month, and our team will rotate around to different parts of Santa Fe, to clean up streets, neighborhoods, and parks. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing #community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city. Some research even shows that a nice-looking neighborhood promotes good behavior. Here comes 9,000 trees 🌳 We're ecstatic to announce that The Friends is the proud recipient of a grant from the Julia Rausing Trust The Trust is contributing £190,000 towards the Silk Wood Community Planting Project (SWCPP) over the next two years, which will fund 9,000 trees planted in the arboretum. What's more, the grant will be used to add new physical interpretation of the woodland, delivering a series of both artist and educational workshops. Emma Griffiths, CEO, The Friends says “We are over the moon and beyond grateful to The Julia Rausing Trust for partnering with us and offering this significant award which will result in the delivery of such an important project at Westonbirt Arboretum. The SWCPP is all about inclusion and community; it would be easy to simply bring in contractors to ‘put things right,’ but instead the heart of SWCPP focusses on young people, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and those with physical and neurodiverse conditions, across a broad range of ethnicities. This means that the arboretum’s beautiful newly restored woodland is designed, planted, managed, monitored and cared for, now and in the future, by Westonbirt Arboretum teams, community groups, schools and other volunteers." #EDCInvestor Lakewood Ranch announced that Star Farms will be the largest community in Lakewood Ranch with the addition of “Saddlestone” by Forestar Group Inc. Forestar, one of the largest single-family residential community developers in the nation, said Saddlestone adds more than 570 acres and 1,300 homesites to Star Farms. Landmarks Illinois announced the 2024 additions to its Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois this morning. This year’s list includes the former Sears Administration Builidng at Homan and Arthington Street in North Lawndale. This massive Classical Revival/Chicago School-style building was built over two phases in the early 1900s. It was the beating business heart of the massive Sears campus, whose construction was driven by renowned Jewish-American businessman and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald. Following Sears departure from Lawndale in the 1970s, the Administration Building has been woefully underutilized. When I worked in Lawndale in the early aughts it held a small mix of political and non-profit offices; a gallery dedicated to African-American artists rented a chunk of fourth floor. The building has been vacant since the 2010s. There have been many discussions about how to reuse the 239000 square foot brick and white terra cotta building, but no real action. This is unfortunate given surrounding adaptive reuse efforts at the campus including: the metamorphosis of its power house into a LEED platinum-rated charter school, the conversion of its catalog building to long-term affordable housing, and the transformation of the ORIGINAL Sears Tower into non-profit officers and classroom space used by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Efforts are currently underway to also restore the Sunken Garden located directly across Arthington from the Administration Building. The upside here is that the Administration Building is back on the market after being purchased by a trucking affiliated company in the late twenty-teens. Now, with some creativity, the leverage of historic tax credits and affordable housing incentives, and maybe some City bond funds it too can expand on Sears legacy on the West Side.
