🚧 It's time for PlanBEE 🚧 Great feature in CIOB People with Peter Barker, partner at Ryder Architecture, sharing all things apprenticeships and the mutual value they bring to young people and employers. "A lot of employers are intimidated by what they perceive as the complexity of hiring an apprentice. PlanBEE helps to remove those complexities. An employer just has to say ‘yes’." Peter comments. This is a system that works. Working with The London School of Architecture, we're currently looking for more London-based employers who can provide placements for future candidates. Richard Jacob’s review, published in Building Design, highlights the importance of the Architecture Apprenticeship Handbook as a vital resource for the architectural profession. Written by Daniel Goodricke and Luke Murray, the Handbook provides detailed guidance on navigating the apprenticeship route to architectural qualification – a pathway that combines practical, on-the-job training with formal education, offering an alternative to the traditional Part 1-3 process. Richard underscores the Handbook’s value for both apprentices and mentors, noting its clear structure and practical advice. With sections covering everything from selecting the right employer and training provider to richly illustrated case studies that showcase real-world projects, the Handbook serves as a comprehensive tool for those embarking on or mentoring within this pathway. The review emphasises how the case studies, aligned with RIBA’s Themes and Values for Architectural Education, demonstrate the breadth and depth of apprentices’ work, illustrating the professional skills they acquire through applied experience. For architectural practices, the Handbook is an invaluable resource to support apprentices and promote a more inclusive, flexible route to qualification. Richard Jacob’s review makes it clear that this resource is not just informative, but essential for anyone involved in architecture apprenticeships, offering insights that can strengthen mentoring relationships and contribute to the development of the next generation of architects. A must-read for those looking to broaden access to the profession and support sustainable learning. https://lnkd.in/e3YZpYxy #architecture #bookreviews #apprenticeships RIBA Publishing

Things are starting to ramp up for DDG Academy in 2024 with work experience and placements for real estate and construction students! We already have more than 16 applications requesting work experience and placements in the real estate and construction industry and over 120 students registering their interest with us! It is so great to see that so many young people are interested in the industry...they say there's a skill shortage?? Not from where we're sitting and this is just from two schools that we work with in South East London! The challenge we see is finding the positions in the industry for them... finding the companies who are able and willing to support young people into the industry, no matter their race, gender, ethnicity or social background. We want to partner with companies who don't just talk about DE&I and turn up to networking and student fair events because it makes them look good and ticks the social responsibility box...we want to partner with companies and businesses who REALLY want to make a difference and help these young people that we speak to, who have such an intense passion for construction and real estate but are just not getting the opportunities. If you are a company or know one in the real estate and construction industry who wants to partner with us to provide opportunities to our students in 2024, reach out and send us a message! We have just today interviewed a driven and ambitious young Construction Management Master's student who's studying at Kingston University in London, with 3 years experience in Construction Management and Interior Design. He has relevant qualifications (Bachelors and Masters in Architecture) and we are looking to post him in a 9-month or full time job placement in the following roles: • Construction Management, Consulting and Contracting • Interior Design • Architecture but, many companies are turning their back on him...why, we ask? Why is an industry that claims is short for skilled people not even giving him an interview, an opportunity, a chance when he clearly has the credentials??? Well, we have decided to take up the fight with him and for him, so we are in this together. He should not have to do this alone. His fight is now our fight too. If you or you know someone who can help provide a placement for this young man and many of our other students, please send us a message. Let's stop with the cliché sayings and tag lines and start actually taking action! Feel free to share this post if you agree 😁 Reach out to us if you want to make a difference. Richard Jacob praises a new handbook as a key resource for apprentices and mentors in architecture. The Architecture Apprenticeship pathway is a relatively new method for achieving professional architectural qualification, combining on-the-job training with an employer and off-the-job training with a certified training provider. As a route to qualification, it is very different from the traditional and well-known Part 1-3 process. The Architecture Apprenticeship Handbook serves as a dedicated resource to explain and outline the Architecture Apprenticeship pathway in detail. The Handbook is aimed at early-career professionals or those considering a career in architecture and demonstrates the benefits and advantages of the apprenticeship pathway. It also honestly describes the potential downsides and answers key questions that may arise when potential students consider this route. In addition, the Handbook aims to widen access and encourage diversification within the profession by highlighting the flexibility and accommodation apprenticeships offer to different personal and professional circumstances. Written by Daniel Goodricke, first-year leader of the Architect (Level 7) Degree Apprenticeship at Northumbria University, and Luke Murray, Architecture BA (Hons) course leader at Ravensbourne University London, the Handbook has been authored by two chartered architects and educators with ties to several well-known architectural academic institutions. Both authors have been involved in the development of architecture apprenticeships with training providers, giving them in-depth knowledge of the apprenticeship pathway and its requirements. https://lnkd.in/e3YZpYxy #architecture #apprenticeships #bookreviews RIBA Publishing

🚧 Inspiration from the Next Generation 🚧 A couple of weeks ago, while travelling on the Crossrail from Heathrow Airport, I witnessed something truly inspiring. Three young children were eagerly calling out (almost screaming) the names of various construction equipment as we passed the Old Oak Common HS2 site. One of the equipment's being described as an "excabator" where they tried multiple times to get the "v". The common theme though - Their excitement and curiosity about the construction world were palpable. It made me wonder: where does the disconnect happen in our education sector? Why aren't more school leavers entering Construction? Only 3% of school leavers are going into the sector! Three solutions that the new government need to endorse and support: - Enhanced Industry-Education Partnerships: Establish stronger collaborations between construction companies and educational institutions. This can include guest lectures, site visits, and hands-on workshops led by industry professionals to give students a real-world understanding of construction careers. - Comprehensive Apprenticeship and Internship Programs: Continue to develop and promote apprenticeship and internship programs that provide practical experience and mentorship for students. These programs should be well-structured, offering clear pathways from education to employment within the construction sector. - Incorporating Construction into STEM Curricula: Integrate construction-related topics into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curricula at schools. This can involve project-based learning where students can engage in building models, understanding construction technologies, and learning about sustainable practices in the industry. The passion and interest are clearly there from a young age. As industry professionals, we need to bridge this gap and ensure that these budding enthusiasts see construction as a viable and exciting career path. Let's work together to inspire and educate the next generation about the opportunities in our field. #ConstructionIndustry #FutureBuilders #Education #Inspiration #HS2 #Crossrail #OldOakCommon
