This is great news for the industry. To facilitate this growth there will need to be a real focus on encouraging young people into the industry, providing training and leadership to ensure that the quality of the installation of the timber frames is maintained. There is currently a shortage of trained installers so this must be one of the key focus points.
Earlier in March, Andrew Carpenter, Chief Executive of the STA, chaired a panel discussion at Futurebuild to explore the Timber in Construction Policy Roadmap in more detail. The panel consisted of Alex Goodfellow, CEO of Donaldson’s Offsite and Board Member of the STA, and David Hopkins, Chief Executive of TDUK. The discussion covered everything from the key priority themes of the roadmap, the work undertaken by the STA to address these and the future of the structural timber industry. Why do codes of practice such as the American concrete Institute (ACI) remains: 1. Silent on many relatively simple issues, 2. Becoming more complicated in revised editions 3. On contrary to point no 2, not yet update simple equations which are less accurate, for instance the eqn used to calculate shear capacity without web reinforcement (2√(fc') which is in use since 1971 edition (ACI 318-71)
Everybody will be aware by now that a new Eurocode 7 will be implemented in the coming years, which will have a direct influence on our daily design work. But what exactly will be changing, and how does it compare to current practice? Geotechnical Engineers are invited to participate in a benchmarking exercise as part of the 2nd Generation Eurocode 7 testing process. The results will play a critical role in shaping the future of geotechnical design standards. The guidelines for the 2nd Generation Eurocode 7 will be presented at the CEN/TC250/SC7 Seminar in Paris. We encourage you to engage by solving one or more of the provided exercises in the PDF (attached) and submitting your solutions by September 15th, 2024. All contributions will be analyzed by the Technical Committee, and conclusions will be discussed and presented at the Eurocode 7 event organized in Paris on October 21 - 22, 2024, where Dutch KIVI Geotechniek members will also be present.
