With over 75% of Australians choosing cremation and the population expected to reach 37.9 million by 2050, cemetery boards nationwide are exploring ways to reduce the carbon emissions and pollutants from cremations. Our advocacy to the Queensland Government is underway. We are making the case for a public crematorium in the Sunshine Coast Council region that can significantly lower emissions while offering culturally respectful cremation practices. Stay tuned for an update in the final 2024 newsletter. We ask the industry 'peak body': What’s the risk if you don't engage the community? Australasian Cemeteries & Crematoria Association, we challenge the engagement processes that exclude the public from discussions about managing public infrastructure. There are interactive ways to share relevant data and research with stakeholders that align with lived experience context experts, requiring thoughtful and careful planning. 🌏 Governance Matters: Commitment to Justice, Equity, and Reconciliation in End-of-Life Care We believe addressing and correcting misinformation surrounding natural burials at Eumundi Cemetery, managed by Sunshine Coast Council is essential. Specifically, there are inaccuracies regarding burial depth and the various natural burial models available. Despite the fact that the latest information sheet on the Council’s website lacks specific details, we advocate for transparency and recommend contacting the Cemetery Services Team for accurate and comprehensive information. In June 2023, during the Climate Conversation at the Floating Land biennial by Noosa Council and Noosa Regional Gallery, we had the opportunity to engage with Sunshine Coast Council representatives, who answered our questions on sustainable practices and the introduction of natural burials. These discussions are necessary as we navigate the complexities of death and dying within an environmental context. Key Takeaways from Our Interaction: 🌱 Natural burials represent a significant step toward sustainable and equitable end-of-life options. 🌱 Governance in cemetery management is vital for ensuring justice and reconciliation within our communities. 🌱 Equitable access to natural burials is essential. 🌱 We must continue to advocate for clear communication and access to information regarding burial processes and regulations. As we move forward, let’s hope we prioritise the values of justice, equity, and reconciliation in all aspects of our work that will help us create a more inclusive approach to end-of-life care. Your contribution is essential and greatly appreciated. Significant progress California has made on multiple fronts to bolster resilience. … In 2023, more than one million acres of *treatments* were conducted on about 700,000 acres (many acres receiving multiple treatments such as thinning, prescribed fire, or other practices to improve forest health and community resilience). This is a significant increase from the 792,000 acres treated over 548,000 acres in 2021. … The increase is largely due to increases in prescribed fire treatments, which more than doubled since 2021. … #WildfireTaskForce #TaskForceProgress
