The Graduation Moment That Will Be Missing
As I look at the announcement for today's Maastricht School of Management (MSM) graduation ceremony https://lnkd.in/eUjzjCZJ, the bittersweet reality sets in: I won’t be there to walk across the stage and receive the degree I’ve worked so hard for. After three years of dedication, balancing work and studies, and pushing through the challenges of an MBA, today was supposed to be the culmination of all that effort. Yet, despite the virtual ceremony and livestream, the tangible experience of being in Maastricht, wearing that graduation gown, and celebrating with peers is something I’ll miss out on.
This situation has made me reflect deeply on the significance of the full academic experience. Like many, I’ve had the opportunity to engage in different learning formats—online, distance, and in-class education—and each has its own value. But there's something profoundly special about being physically present. It’s not just the degree that marks an achievement; it's the relationships formed, the unplanned conversations during coffee breaks, the energy of sitting in a lecture hall with diverse classmates. It’s these human connections that make the journey complete.
But as much as I am disappointed about missing out on this milestone, I know the real value lies in the knowledge gained and the personal growth I’ve achieved over the last few years.
This is also why I’ve encouraged my wife to pursue a blended MBA, combining the flexibility of online learning with the in-person touch. Having that human connection, even in just a few modules, can make all the difference in shaping your educational journey.
To all my fellow graduates, whether present in Maastricht or joining virtually like myself, congratulations. We’ve achieved something significant. And while I may not be there in person, I know the learnings we’ve gained will continue to guide us for the rest of our lives.
