𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗽: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗮𝗯 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 Innovation in science has the potential to transform industries, improve lives, and shape the future. However, many groundbreaking discoveries often stay confined within the lab, unable to reach the broader market where they can make a real impact. Why is that? One of the main challenges in bringing science to market is the 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Many scientists focus solely on the technical aspects of their work, overlooking the importance of product development, market needs, and business strategy. Additionally, 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁 often stall the transition from innovation to real-world application. But it doesn't have to be this way. To overcome these barriers, we need to: 1. 𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 between scientists, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders, ensuring that research is driven by real-world needs. 2. Provide 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 to researchers, equipping them with the skills necessary to navigate commercialization. 3. Develop 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, encouraging private and public investments that support the journey from lab to market. 4. Streamline 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 to make it easier for scientific innovations to pass through compliance and reach consumers. 5. Cultivate a culture that values 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵; research that actively aims to solve real-world problems and is market-ready. By addressing these challenges, we can accelerate the path from discovery to market, ensuring that scientific breakthroughs are not just celebrated within research communities but are also 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 in everyday life. Let’s work towards a future where science in the lab seamlessly flows into innovations that benefit society. I recently attended a Research Translation café that offered valuable insights into the commercialization journey. Three dynamic speakers from different sectors - a MedTech startup, a VC fund, and CSIRO's ON accelerator - shared their experiences and wisdom. One insight particularly resonated with me as an academic: "love the problem, not the solution." As researchers, we often become attached to our specific solutions, but true innovation starts with a well-defined problem that might have multiple viable solutions worthy of investment. It also ensures that the problem remains the north star of your journey. The discussions delved into commercialization challenges and strategies, with an enlightening perspective on viewing rejections as valuable steps in validating your intellectual property. It's encouraging to see universities offering these professional development opportunities to enhance the business acumen of academics and researchers. Very excited to soon welcome our speakers and guests from Switzerland for the 1st Serbia-Switzerland Innovation Forum, taking place on 11. December in the prestigious Palace of Serbia in Belgrade. This is a project we have been working on for months, together with the Ministry of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation, and with the support of the Belgrade Science and Technology Park, the Center for the Promotion of Science, the Swiss-Serbian Chamber of Commerce, and Novartis. The Forum aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the fields of science, technology, and innovation. This Forum presents a unique opportunity to bring together leading experts, researchers, and entrepreneurs from Serbia and Switzerland to exchange knowledge, ideas, and experiences. The Forum will focus on pressing topics such as clean technologies and sustainability, intellectual property & technology transfer, boosting start-up development, investment landscape and institutional support, as well as health & innovation. The organization of this Forum is inspired by Switzerland's long-standing support for Serbia in developing its innovation ecosystem.
