I would not have been at my current opportunity if it wasn’t for LinkedIn.    It was an outbound message that led to my first conversation.   Many individuals opt out of taking care of their LinkedIn profiles because they don’t see the benefit.   Most recruiters and hiring managers are actively on this platform, and many use it for out-bounding recruitment initiatives.   When they are looking for great candidates who fit the opportunity, you want to appear in these searches so you are considered.   By adding the right keywords to your profile and creating your personal brand on LinkedIn, you increase your chances of being discovered.   By building up your brand, you’ll be surprised at the number of opportunities that will unexpectedly knock on your door.    Will you get these messages immediately after fixing up your profile?   Maybe not. Dear fellow recruiters, hiring managers and TA folks in general, Please understand that when a candidate reaches out to you with a connection request (with a personalized note) or an inmail, that we are burning one of our 5/month outreaches/DMs that LinkedIn allows us. Take it to heart that we have done our research, we have looked at your website job board and have either applied to a position or are looking to make a connection for future positions. Even if you know for a fact that your company will not be hiring for that particular position anytime in the future, just let us know that. Believe me, we understand the market and we are just trying our best to make connections, network and secure a job. A simple "thanks for reaching out. we aren't hiring" or "Thanks for letting me know you've applied. If we find you to be a match, one of our recruiters will be reaching out to you for next steps", goes a long, long way. It only takes a couple of seconds and gives someone a very positive experience even if it's a no. 😊

Lisa Shapiro made a comment on my last post and I’d like to highlight that idea. A lot of people have been messaging me saying that “random recruiters” are messaging them about “amazing opportunities.” And unfortunately I have to be the bearer of bad news. Many of these are scams. So what I highly suggest, and this is what Lisa commented, do research on the person who reaches out to you. And even if you know they are a recruiter, still do some research on them. There are some crooked recruiters out there and you don’t want to be involved with them. Check out their LinkedIn, their Google reviews, etc. Remember that a recruiter is part of your first impression to a company. So make sure the person representing you is a respected and honest person. #recruiting #jobs #research

Lately, I’ve noticed an increasing number of fake candidate profiles on LinkedIn. These candidates often present themselves as the “perfect hire”—Ivy League degrees, work experience at all the top tech companies, and always open to work (but only remotely). But when you finally get on a call, things don’t add up. They can’t explain their experience, look different from their profile picture, or even read from a script. For recruiters, hiring managers, and founders, this is frustrating. We’re already navigating a competitive talent market, and this adds another layer of complexity. The question is—why are people doing this? - Some might be creating “ideal” profiles to increase their chances of being contacted, trying to game the system. - Others might actually be looking for second jobs and outsource the interviews to fake candidates so they don’t have to handle it themselves. Whatever the reason, everyone suffers—recruiters working through stacks of applications, startups trying to grow, and real candidates with those qualifications who now face added scrutiny. What’s been working for me? Asking detailed, specific questions about past roles and results to help reveal real experience. And video interviews to verify the person behind the profile. I've seen this "Interested in working with us in the future?" prompt in the "About" section on many company profiles on LinkedIn. In the past, I've clicked "I'm interested" for multiple companies. However, I never noticed any real difference—no job alerts, no follow-up from a recruiter, nothing. Could anyone please explain to me the point of this feature? Has anyone had a different experience or found it useful in any way? What does it even mean, "You'll be noted as expressing interest for up to a year?"
