Fab to chat with Dr Nora Koslowski for the EVEN Careers podcast. When people ask me why I didn't sell my Money School brand to the Barefoot Investor when he made me an unsolicited offer in 2017, I point them to one line on page 17 of Barefoot's book, which has sold over 2m copies: "It's my firm belief that if you're married you should be sharing the same bank account, and all your finances." This is dangerous advice for everyone, but especially women given the rates of financial abuse we experience compared to men. The thought that he might teach young women this concept under my brand was horrifying enough for me to say no to Barefoot. I've never regretted the decision. I spend a lot of my education delivery reminding people of the danger this advice poses, and why it's not something to do lightly. As I say in this clip: If you've done it and it's worked, great. Glad to hear it. But please remember you are the exception, not the rule. There are ~12.5m women in this country. More than 2m of them will experience financial abuse. Their odds of escaping that abuse are much lower if they opt for an all-in joint approach. For those who are curious: The stats also say 1 in 14 Aussie men will experience financial abuse in their lifetime. That's nearly a million Aussie men. Less than half the number of women, but still - a large enough number to be concerning. #StayingMoney in an account to which you are the only signatory and no one else has access doesn't have to be a secret. But it does have to stay in your control alone to be effective. Do not abdicate responsibility for your finances to anyone else.

I went through this brilliant report minutes ago. I definitely love the qualitative approach. Here are a few of my takeaways; 1. As the closure of bank branches continues in the UK, People miss the face-to-face interaction that takes place when they visit a branch. 2. Your long-term customers do not necessarily trust your offerings as a bank. It might just be the case of "the devil they know is better than the devil they don't" 3. More need for Pension awareness 4. Other forms of accessing finance(loans from financial institutions) should be promoted while ensuring consumer protection. 5. Teaching financial education in schools will promote financial literacy, however, input from institutions like Money and Pensions Service is also important to achieve better financial wellbeing 6. More long-term and inclusive approach is needed to #endpoverty and promote #financialinclusion .

I find most women are extremely conservative in managing their finances. They hold hundreds of thousands of dollars in a savings account yielding 0.01%. They invest their money as if they were 60 when they’re 38. They focus on paying off their low-interest debt like student loans before addressing their retirement. Why do they do this? They’re searching so deeply for certainty and the illusion of safety. They often don't realize they are exposing themselves to a level of risk there that will impede their long-term financial health. Aggressively paying off low-interest debt means you miss out on compound interest at a higher rate. Holding high cash balances in a bank account yielding 0.2% means you need to save more to meet your work optional goal. Overall it means you are still exposed to risk and you have to work even harder to achieve financial independence than you have to. I don't want that at all. How does self-worth impact our relationship with money? It’s a question that can be confusing—and seems like it should be asked the other way around: doesn’t money determine how we feel about ourselves? It's important to empower women by educating them about their finances and how it impacts their lives. According to the Bank of Montreal, 73 percent of women reported not having a written financial plan, compared to 64 percent of men. Additionally, more men have a financial advisor (42 percent) than women (37 percent), and only 17 percent of women use free digital tools compared to 25 percent of men.One woman who is working to change women’s relationship with money is Linda Grizely 🐻, CFP®, MSFS, CAP®.
