In series 5 of 18 in the School Tax Election series, we focus on two crucial aspects: fostering community awareness about the Budget Advisory Committee and establishing a roadmap for its successful launch. By effectively educating the public and implementing a well-defined plan, you can ensure the Budget Advisory Committee thrives as a valuable asset in your budgetary process. As the general election comes closer to fruition, contributing to non-partisan investments in young voters is an ongoing necessity beyond educating them to register to vote then to do secure voting. For example, this recent entry of the info session series that I co-lead for continuing an effective collaboration between University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy and United Nations Association-National Capital Area. One of the main purposes of each session is to give public policy students access to overlapping their academic learning in policy topics with numerous opportunities to service and/or advocate for marginalized groups of the DMV public under any involvement they would want to have under or with UNA-NCA before they graduate. PROMISES MADE MUST BE ACTED ON IMMEDIATELY The Southern Chiefs’ Organization is responding to the Speech from the Throne, delivered by the Honourable Anita Neville Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, to open the second session of the 43rd Manitoba Legislature. “There are several promises made today which will lift up our First Nation citizens in hope of reconciliation moving forward in a meaningful way.” stated SCO Grand Chief Jerry Daniels. “I am hopeful the momentum and dedication from this government to work with First Nations and First Nation citizens will continue to grow, and that promises made today will be supported with the money and resources needed to quickly bring them to reality.” SCO is optimistic about the commitments to include First Nations languages in the classroom, provide our on reserve citizens with voting rights in school board elections, promises to empower our vulnerable citizens, and other efforts outlined in the speech. However, there are gaps in this Throne Speech which means First Nation citizens will continue to live with inequities. The province is accountable to First Nations and must step up to do its part in closing the education gap, closing the health gap, and address the over incarceration of First Nation people. YVote was featured in a recent article discussing the importance of youth participation in democracy! Our Democracy Camp program was highlighted for our work in engaging young people in claiming their civic identity. Here are some key points about Democracy Camp mentioned in the article: 👥 In its 3rd year, our Camp brought together 54 NYC high schoolers to imagine an ideal democracy. 🎤 Participants engaged in real-world activities, such as interviewing passersby on the streets about important issues. 💡 Campers plan and execute a year-long democracy project to implement in their communities. 🗳 Our program focused on actions beyond voting, preparing students to engage even if they're not yet of voting age. Hey y'all, I have an exciting announcement to make! I am running for Chairman of the Davidson County Republican Party in Nashville, TN. If you are a registered voter in Nashville, and have any history voting in Republican primary elections, you are welcome to come and participate in officer elections (see the comment below for more details on this process, its a little complicated, but I will answer your questions in the comments). I would be honored to have your vote on Saturday February 1, 2025 to lead the county GOP for the next two years. Nashville is my hometown and I love all that this city has to offer. We are far from perfect however, with a budget that is ballooning with debt (the 3rd largest expenditure in the 2025 budget at 12.54% of the budget). This limits our ability to hire more police and school resource officers to protect our communities. It limits how much we can pay teachers and provide school supplies to our kids. For these and many other reasons I am running to chair the Republican Party in Nashville because I see our city on the path towards becoming like Baltimore, Detroit, or Chicago. Every elected office in this city is run by the Democratic Party, and our City Council, though officially non-partisan, is controlled by liberals, and contains a very loud and very powerful extreme-left cohort. I have no illusions that Nashville will become a Republican city anytime soon, but it certainly should not be as Left as it currently is. We need more fiscal conservative watchdogs on the Council making sure spending is kept under control. We need balance in our School Board - 9 out of 9 School Board members are democrats. The US Supreme Court is more balanced that our local school board. Shouldn't we at least have balance in the way we run our local government? The most powerful government is the one that controls the things we do, and use at home. Shouldn't it be run by people that represent ALL of us? If you are interested in joining the Republican Party, electing officers for the next two years, and bringing "balance to the force", then I invite you to register for the Davidson County Party Re-Org with the link provided - be sure to select Davidson County from the dropdown list on the form. (See comments below about voting procedures, there are rules for this shindig). https://lnkd.in/ebgg3vsW

Want to feel a bit more hopeful about US democracy, Gen Z political participation, and reaching across partisan divides? The results from America in One Room: The Youth Vote are out! Some highlights: ✨ When asked about those with whom they strongly disagreed, there was an increase in mutual respect. The percentage agreeing that those with whom they strongly disagreed “have good reasons; there just are better ones on the other side” went up overall from 64% to 71%. ✨ The experience of deliberation also increased their satisfaction with democracy. When asked “How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the way democracy is working in the U.S” overall satisfaction increased an impressive *29 points* from 29% to 58%. Republicans increased dramatically from 38% to 72%. Independents increased from 24% to 40% and Democrats increased from 26% to 52%. The deliberative experience seemed to be a positive demonstration for how democracy could work across our many differences. We know that voting is a habit. Once people start voting regularly, they continue to do so. Increasing voter turnout in the short run helps establish regular voting habits in the long run. Nonprofit engagement can significantly improve turnout rates for young voters, voters of color and low-income voters. Recognizing this, cities like Oakland and Berkeley are beginning to support efforts to engage high school student voters as young as 16 and 17 years old, by enabling them to register and vote in local school board elections (https://loom.ly/tl_GnVE). And in the meantime, nonprofits can act to increase voter turnout among their clients: 1. get them registered and 2. remind them to #vote with a message that their vote matters and can make a difference. The message that “you matter” works a lot better in turning out disengaged youth voters than a policy message. What can be done in your city or region? https://loom.ly/KEHnv-k
