Crafting Diversity: The Stack's Architectural Precision In this KAAN Architecten's project, our aim of achieving a balance between individuality and community led us to put much effort into detail. The design aims to minimize repetition within the project, and we strategically optimized setback measurements within an 800 mm sub-grid to enhance the connections between balconies, terraces, and the facade, simplifying these elements without compromising their dynamic aesthetic. Allard Assies from KAAN Architecten: ”When we started working on the design for The Stack, the brief called for a wide variety of house floor plans (large and small) and large living balconies. Variety implies movement and variation in the facade. We opted for a brutalist concrete architecture. This enabled us to work with large cantilever balconies and varying depths in the façade. Contrary to the concept, variety requires rationalisation and standardisation. Thus, the entire façade is based on the 1125x1125mm grid, and the balconies have consecutive sizes of 800, 1.600, and 2.400mm. The house plans are formed around a fixed core with shaft, toilet, meter cupboard, ventilation, and heat-cooling unit. The choice of grid and standards allowed us to work with a limited number of basic details. The precast concrete facade parts and balconies were based on the same principles and dimensions. This made the entire construction economically feasible, and we look back on a successful project with a large façade variation”. 🏗️ Norway’s Curved Tower Shows the Full Capabilities of Timber! 🇳🇴 Scalloped sections of green timber clad the facade of Lumber 4, Southern Norway’s first and largest timber hybrid building, designed to showcase the full capabilities of timber construction. 🔍 Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Innovative Design: Designed by Oslotre, one of Norway’s top timber architecture and engineering specialists, the building uses a composite structure of glulam, cross-laminated timber (CLT), and concrete. This system is now economically competitive with conventional steel and concrete buildings. 2️⃣ Sustainable Construction: Lumber 4 was constructed in near-record time, aligned with the EU’s new taxonomy, and utilised prefabrication to reduce embodied carbon by 53% relative to conventional construction methods. This highlights the environmental benefits of timber hybrid buildings. 3️⃣ Architectural Excellence: The building features curved sections that follow the adjacent road, supported by large wooden beams. The floors use a slim and efficient composite structure of CLT and concrete, addressing fire and acoustic requirements, while diagonals on the ground floor facilitate vehicular access. 🌆 The building’s recessed ground floor curves, upper floors with projecting beams, and checkerboard-patterned facade demonstrate timber construction's aesthetic and functional versatility.
