Dr. Assaf Sarig from the Department of History at the University of Haifa and Israel Yeruchimovich, a PhD candidate in Economics at Brown University, share a compelling article examining the impact of religious social networks on the cultural integration and professional specialization of Jews in 19th-century Germany. In support of their research, our consulting unit utilized digitization to map the railways in Prussia between 1835-1885. #Digitization is a key tool for preserving and managing historical information, and in this case, for mapping the railways from this historical period. #GIScience #spatialdatascience #GIS #UniversityOfHaifa

INTRODUCING COAFRWOLOGY: THE NEW PAN-AFRICAN SCIENCE This article introduces COAFRWOLOGY, a groundbreaking Pan-African science that offers a contemporary and holistic approach to understanding the African world. Developed by Mpeke-Ntonga Métila Me Nyodi (Alphonse Mpeke) in 2007, COAFRWOLOGY builds upon the philosophical and ideological framework of COAFRWO (Contemporary African World/view), emerging as a response to historical and contemporary African marginalisation. Rooted in this African-centered world/view, COAFRWOLOGY seeks to reconcile the spiritual and historical separation between Africans on the continent and those in the oversea. This article explores the foundations, principles, and implications of COAFRWOLOGY as a transformative tool for African identity, cultural resurgence, and global solidarity. By focusing on the interconnectedness of African peoples, COAFRWOLOGY positions itself as a pivotal discourse for decolonizing knowledge and reimagining African futures.

On Ogen's 'Reconstructing a Silenced Past: Echoes of Revisionism and Counter Hegemonic History' - by (SMB) Sesan Michael Johnson #inaugural #lecture Thurs, Sept. 5, 2024 The title of Prof. Olukoya Ogen's inaugural lecture (Reconstructing a Silenced Past: Echoes of Revisionism and Counter Hegemonic History) reminds me of Thucydides who broke away from the Herodotean historical paradigm. Remarkably, this earned Thucydides the title of the 'first revisionist historian.' Revisionism is a radical approach challenging existing epistemology and dominant scholars —a terrain many historians would not dare because of the grit and the gut it requires. However, working against the grain is critical to uncovering the silenced past - organic sources muted by dominant oligarchic, colonial, imperial, and epistemological order. No wonder, James M. Banner Jr. says, "Ever since Thucydides dismissed Herodotus, historians have differed about the past." I respectfully salute the erudite professor (Ogen) for his audacity. I say thank you, sir, to him for his blessedness. Congrats to him. I have never met him once. Nonetheless, his writings and thought system are organic and catalytic. Some of his works include: 1. Traditional farming and Indigenous knowledge systems in Africa: perspective from the Ikale-Yoruba experience 2. The Akoko-Ikale: A revision of colonial historiography on the construction of ethnic identity in Southeastern Yorubaland 3. The Ikale of South-eastern Yorubaland, 1500-1800: A study in ethnic identity and traditional economy 4. Historicizing African Contributions to the Emancipation Movement: The Haitian Revolution, 1791-1805 5. Historicising and Globalising the African Environmental Condition 6. Geography and Economy in Southwestern Nigeria: A Critique of Colonial Anthropology on the Pre-Colonial Economic Geography of Ikaleland #revisionism #history #hegemony #reconstruction #ikale #yoruba

For much of history, ideology and superstition have been the methods of explanation and along with politics have been the methods of decision. The Venus Project advocates the methods of science as one paradigm for arriving at explanations and decisions. https://lnkd.in/eReJDKVw #thevenusproject #venusproject #oprojetovenus #elproyectovenus #resourcebasedeconomy #roxannemeadows #ПроектВенера #science

Is Network Analysis a useful methodological tool for historians? https://lnkd.in/dQyZGHSj In her 2022 article, Natalia Alvarez articulates a compelling argument for the applicability and potential of Social Network Analysis (SNA) in historical research, particularly in diachronic studies focused on interconnectedness. Alvarez explores the nascent interdisciplinary methodologies that integrate network analysis, geosciences, and historical data. These approaches, she suggests, enhance our understanding of historical human interactions and the evolution of social structures, thus affirming the value of SNA in historical inquiry. These tools possess substantial potential for analyzing historical events linked to migration, trade, the evolution of cultural, ethnic and national identities, and the expansion of globalization.; #OAHPicks; #AHAhistorians; #royalhistsoc; #networkanalysis; #associationofcaribbeanhistorians

The Ishango bone discovered by Jean de Heinzelin in 1950 near the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda is indeed a remarkable archaeological find. Dated to around 25,000 years ago, it is notable not only for its age but also for the markings carved into it, which suggest a rudimentary form of mathematical notation. What makes the Ishango bone significant is the presence of tally marks and grouped notches that appear to represent numerical sequences. This discovery challenges previous assumptions about the origins of mathematics, particularly in Africa. Before the Ishango bone was found, the historical narrative often credited ancient civilizations like those in Egypt and Mesopotamia with the development of early mathematics. The presence of such mathematical inscriptions on the Ishango bone suggests a sophisticated understanding of numerical concepts much earlier than previously thought. This challenges Eurocentric views that ancient African societies lacked advanced intellectual achievements. Instead, it supports the idea that Africa played a crucial role in the development of fundamental mathematical concepts. In essence, the Ishango bone provides evidence that mathematics likely had its origins in Africa long before its formalization in other parts of the world. It serves as a testament to the intellectual capabilities and achievements of early African societies, reshaping our understanding of the history of mathematics and emphasizing Africa's significant contributions to human knowledge and civilization. #ancientafrica #mathematics #africa

📑 The origin of the word “#Statistics” is mistakenly sought in the Latin word “Status”. Although the term is indeed etymologically linked to “Status”, it is derived from the Greek noun “Στατός” (statos), meaning standing. 🔍 Understanding the #etymology of the term "Statistics" is crucial as it reveals the historical and conceptual development of the field. 📖 The term “Statistics” originates from Latin and Italian words related to state governance and political administration, reflecting its early applications in these areas. 📊 The connection of “Statistics” to “state” rather than “governance” raises questions about its broader role in state administration versus the specific process of governance. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gVFmt6P3 ✍ Spyros Missiakoulis from Philips University Cyprus #historyofstatistics #originofstatistics #etymology #statistics #Achenwal

#ResearchThemes Identities and Empires. Modern global culture has been irrevocably transformed by the empires that have risen and fallen over millennia, whose legacies endure in our politics, socio-economics, landscapes, environments and ideologies. Different empires are frequently considered in isolation, but our department brings together expertise ranging from Hellenistic Greece and Rome to the British trading ports in China. Our examination of empires and their effect on identity extends beyond issues of power and politics to also explore regional identities and the relationship of major cities to their surrounding landscapes. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/ejstdc7J #WeAreUon #Classocs #Archaeology #Research The research themes are inspired by the research interests of our staff and as a result may change for reasons of, for example, research developments or legislative changes. The research themes displayed here are an example of typical research themes, not a definitive list.
