After months of proof-of-concept development, we are proud to announce the successful conclusion of the Mining Technology Innovation Challenge, powered by Rogers 5G. NORCAT, along with partners Rogers Communications, Dell Technologies, OVIN, and MICA | Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator, have unleashed the potential of 5G underground, accelerating its application in mine safety with SafeSight Exploration Inc. Inc.’s winning technology. A live demonstration of SafeSight’s DeepTraxx-5G and SafeScanner-5G was live-streamed from the NORCAT Underground Centre, simulating a potential thermal runaway scenario involving a damaged BEV where employees were trapped underground. Given the extreme risk, the current protocol involves containment until the fire burns out before sending additional support. However, SafeSight’s 5G-enabled technology can be deployed from the surface, providing crucial scene assessment thermal video and 3D mapping to responders before they venture underground. The result? Safer and more effective assessment and search and rescue operations. The integration of 5G technology into the mining sector holds immense promise, offering high-speed connectivity and low-latency capabilities that significantly enhance safety, communication, productivity, and operational efficiency in underground mines across the globe. How can mining companies reach their net zero emission goals by 2050? ⛏️ Electrification is playing a key role in assisting the industry to make progress in line with these commitments. Ravi Jain and Nicholas McKenzie explain how the electrification of mine operations can be accelerated using a systems engineering approach (AEOS). AEOS is a vertically integrated systems approach driven by MBSE and simulation to develop scalable, reliable and flexible solutions for mining operations.
