As a resident of Brazil, married to a Dane, and parent to two spirited half-Viking children, Denmark holds a special place in my heart. Thus, it’s with great admiration that I share a remarkable story unfolding in the streets of Aarhus, Denmark – a city’s resolute campaign against single-use waste, with coffee cups serving as the initial battleground. Could this herald the dawn of a “Reuse Renaissance”? In the bustling urban milieu, where glass bottles, plastic packaging, and disposable coffee cups once cluttered the sidewalks, a resounding call for change echoed from businesses and civic leaders alike. Witnessing the mounting piles of waste, they united in resolve, initiating a pioneering solution. Enter the innovative “reverse vending scheme,” a groundbreaking endeavor catalyzing a cultural shift. With an initial focus on coffee cups, this initiative builds upon Denmark’s esteemed tradition of deposit refund systems. Collaboration emerged as the cornerstone, with over 40 establishments joining forces, and 25 collection machines strategically deployed across the city. Yet, the journey towards sustainability encounters formidable obstacles. The allure of single-use convenience often eclipses the appeal of reusability. To surmount this challenge, two pivotal solutions beckon: expansion and policy innovation. Inspired by Denmark’s success, I am eager to replicate this concept here in Brazil. It’s incredibly inspiring to witness the effectiveness of such initiatives, and I believe they hold immense potential for our communities. If anybody shares this vision or has innovative ideas to contribute, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Together, let’s turn inspiration into action and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future in Brazil.

Bine ați venit, România! ! ♻️🤝 We are thrilled to welcome Romania as a new #CloseTheGlassLoop national platform and we pledge our support to Circular Economy Coalition - CERC in building an action plan for glass collection and recycling in the country. In November 2023, Romania introduced a Deposit-Return System covering all beverages, which will have a major impact on the collection & recycling of glass containers. And at a recent conference we co-organised in Bucharest entitled “Towards a Close the Glass Loop Action Plan for Romania”, we could measure the interest from all value chain partners to achieve ambitious objectives for the circular economy of glass packaging. In the words of Mircea Fechet, the Romanian Minister for Environment, Waters and Forests, who introduced the conference, “The introduction of a Deposit-Return System is a game-changer for Romania and we welcome the decision by the Circular Economy Coalition to join Close the Glass Loop, as this will further enhance the successful implementation of our ambitious objectives for glass collection and recycling by drawing on best practices across the European Union”. We'll certainly do everything we can to help! Germany categorizes waste into 842 different types. One might assume this precision means we know exactly what each category contains, but reality begs to differ. I guess most of us are familiar with the black bin for general waste, a common sight in our daily lives. However, waste management systems vary significantly across cities. For example, in Berlin, besides the black bin for general waste, there are yellow bins for packaging, brown for bio-waste, and blue for paper. Meanwhile, in Hamburg, it's not mandatory to have yellow or brown bins. This leads to a completely different composition of general waste in Hamburg’s black bins compared to Berlin’s. This variation highlights the need to consider external factors in waste analysis and management. By acknowledging and analyzing these differences, we can much more accurately determine the contents of each waste category, despite their supposed similarity. Let's aim for more informed and effective waste management strategies by diving deeper into these distinctions. #WasteManagement #Recycling #Sustainability #Germany

In Sweden, innovation meets environmental consciousness in a unique and modern way. The country's ingenious approach to waste disposal involves the installation of trash cans equipped with WiFi technology. These futuristic trash cans not only serve as receptacles for waste but also as beacons of connectivity, encouraging individuals to responsibly dispose of their trash while staying connected. By seamlessly integrating technology into everyday actions like throwing away garbage, Sweden not only promotes a cleaner environment but also creates a harmonious blend of convenience and sustainability that resonates with the modern world. This innovative initiative reflects Sweden's commitment to both reducing litter and embracing the possibilities that arise when technology and environmental consciousness intersect.

🍺 What if your beer is the answer to sustainable building insulation? Welcome HopfON, a 🇩🇪 Bavarian project that promises to revolutionise the construction industry by turning hop waste -one of beer's key ingredients- into construction materials like acoustic insulation panels. A proud finalist of the 🇪🇺 2024 NEB Prizes for shaping a circular industrial ecosystem, HopfON bridges the gap between agriculture and construction, paving the road to a circular ecosystem that benefits both industries. 🌱 Scaling up HopfON's game-changing materials could significantly reduce CO2 emissions and agricultural waste, introducing a cost-effective recycling solution. The project's sustainability goals are fourfold: ✅ to achieve resource efficiency through waste utilisation ✅ to reduce carbon footprint with low-energy production processes ✅ to facilitate closed-loop recycling by introducing materials that can be broken down into their parts at the end of their lifecycle ✅ and to drive socio-economic benefits by creating market opportunities and fostering community development. 🙌 Follow HopfON as it is shaping a more circular future for construction! Joining Hands for a Greener Tomorrow: G+D Employees Take Action in Barcelona As part of the Let’s Clean Up Europe initiative, we, the employees of G+D, are proud to announce our participation in a collaborative effort to collect waste in the beautiful Collserola Natural Park close to Barcelona. This activity is not just about cleaning up; it’s a powerful statement of our commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. The Let’s Clean Up Europe campaign is a continent-wide movement that encourages citizens to take direct action against litter in our natural spaces. Last year, the campaign saw over 1000 clean-up actions across Europe. It’s a call to raise awareness, foster community spirit, and most importantly, have fun while doing something meaningful for our planet. At G+D, we understand the importance of sustainability and the impact of human activity on the environment. That’s why we’ve decided to roll up our sleeves and do our part. Collserola Natural Park, a green oasis and lung near Barcelona will be the focus of our clean-up activity. Together, we’ll comb through the park, collecting and sorting waste, and ensuring that it’s disposed of responsibly. This is more than just a clean-up; it’s an opportunity to educate and inspire. As we work, we’ll discuss the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, and share ideas on how we can all contribute to a waste-free future. We invite everyone to join us in this endeavor—let’s make a difference, one piece of litter at a time. Stay tuned for updates on our progress and share your own experiences in other clean-ups around Europe! use #cleanupeurope. Together, we can clean up Europe and create a legacy of sustainability for generations to come. #cleanupeurope#gieseckedevrient#employeeengagement
