🚀 Digital Skills to Succeed! 🌐     In today's fast-paced digital world, the World Economic Forum highlights a crucial fact: 54% of the global workforce needs digital skills to meet industry demands. In #Asia, 92% of young graduates in Bangladesh, 66.3% in India, and 70% in VietNam lack essential digital skills, leaving many unprepared for the rapidly changing job market.     To address this issue, we are excited to introduce the Digital Skills to Succeed in Asia (DS2S) project, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). From the U.S.'s booming online learning market to South Korea’s tech-savvy, yet traditional approach, each country is tackling digital education on its own terms. 💡 But here’s the real question: Can we create a global standard where everyone benefits? In India and Malaysia, digital platforms are opening doors to underserved communities, while Africa is catching up fast, despite infrastructure challenges. The future of education? It’s digital, but it won’t be the same for everyone. The challenge is making sure we leave no one behind. Is Singapore really winning the skills race, or are we just climbing a ladder leaning against the wrong wall? The latest PIAAC results were recently released, and Singapore’s glowing report card is making headlines. A leap from 25th to 10th in numeracy rankings and steady improvement in literacy positioning? Sounds like a cause for celebration - right? But let’s pause and look beneath the surface. Yes, our workforce has made strides, especially in numeracy, but here’s the uncomfortable truth: our literacy scores remain stagnant at 255, below the OECD mean and far behind Finland’s stellar 296. And while we tout our younger workforce’s above-average performance, we conveniently gloss over challenges faced by older adults, gender disparities, and the looming issue of adaptive problem-solving; a skill critical in an era of automation and AI. If Singapore truly aims to be a global skills leader, we need to stop celebrating incremental ranking shifts and start addressing the foundational gaps holding us back. Literacy stagnation isn’t just a number - it’s a reflection of workforce adaptability and inclusivity. Adaptive problem-solving near the average (read mediocre) isn’t good enough in a world that demands innovation at every turn. The SkillsFuture movement has undoubtedly sparked progress, but is it enough? Are we equipping ALL Singaporeans for the future, or just a select few? It’s time for honest conversations. Let’s celebrate progress but not at the cost of ignoring where we fall short. Rankings mean nothing if we’re not preparing our workforce for real-world challenges. We must accelerate our efforts to close it—quickly and effectively. Southeast Asia’s education landscape is rapidly evolving, creating new opportunities for global universities. Indonesia is taking a significant step by introducing "Introduction to AI" as a mandatory course for all first-year students at Universitas Kristen Indonesia starting in September 2024. Vietnam is becoming a hub for international students, with over 22,000 already enrolled, highlighting its growing appeal for cross-border education. Meanwhile, Malaysia is preparing to launch its Higher Education Plan for 2026-2035, focusing on aligning education with the country’s digital and workforce needs, particularly in AI and technology sectors.

The other day I was discussing with Muhammad Umar and Adil Khalil the Pathway for Pakistan's Progress and I strongly believe it is Embracing Global Technological Insights. Why I think this? Because in our rapidly evolving world, learning from the technological advancements of other countries is crucial. By studying the successes and challenges faced by nations at the forefront of innovation, Pakistan can navigate its own technological journey more effectively, avoiding pitfalls and capitalizing on proven strategies. Take #SouthKorea, for instance. Once an agrarian economy, South Korea invested heavily in technology and education, transforming itself into a global tech powerhouse. A result of this support is companies like Samsung Electronics. Moreover, I think the emphasis on STEM education and the creation of innovation hubs like Seoul's Techno Valley have spurred immense growth. Pakistan can adopt similar models by enhancing its educational infrastructure and fostering public-private partnerships to stimulate tech-driven development. Another exemplary case is #Estonia. Often referred to as the "Digital Republic," Estonia's commitment to e-governance has revolutionized its public sector by offering 99% of its government services online. I find this approach fascinating as it has streamlined bureaucratic processes, increased transparency, and improved citizen engagement. Pakistan can leverage these insights to enhance its own e-governance initiatives, improving efficiency and service delivery for its citizens. Moreover, #China's focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics showcases how prioritizing specific technological sectors can yield substantial economic dividends. By establishing AI research centers and investing in AI startups, like Baidu, Inc. and BITMAIN, China has positioned itself as a leader in this field. I believe Pakistan can draw from this experience by identifying key technological areas that align with its unique strengths and potential, thus fostering innovation and economic growth. By learning from these global examples, I think Pakistan has the opportunity to craft a technology strategy that is both ambitious and achievable. Embracing the do's and don'ts of other nations' experiences can pave the way for sustainable growth and a competitive edge in the global market. Let's seize this opportunity to learn, adapt, and innovate, ensuring that Pakistan not only keeps pace with global technological trends but also becomes a leader in its own right! 🔍 What are your thoughts on leveraging global technological insights for local development? The tools and skills required for human is evolving and it has been changing at a rapid pace in recent years. For the future of work, several essential skills stand out. Digital literacy is crucial, as proficiency in digital tools and platforms is increasingly important. Adaptability is key, enabling individuals to quickly adjust to new environments and technologies. Critical thinking is vital for analyzing problems and making informed decisions. Effective collaboration across diverse teams is important for leveraging different perspectives. Clear and effective communication is essential for conveying ideas and building relationships. Finally, sustainability awareness is becoming more significant, as integrating sustainable practices into work processes addresses global challenges and ensures long-term success. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Microsoft Pakistan have signed a new agreement to strengthen IT education and skills in Pakistan. The partnership will provide students and faculty with access to cutting-edge technology and training, and will launch initiatives like the Imagine Cup 2024, Founders Hub, and AI Skilling program. Federal Secretary for IT Nasir Jami praised the collaboration, emphasizing the government's commitment to creating employment opportunities for IT graduates and promoting a knowledge-based economy. HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed highlighted the importance of equipping students with the necessary skills to navigate the evolving technological landscape.
