🌾Strengthening Pest Management Through Knowledge Transfer🐛✨ Following the recent handover ceremony of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Manual addressing Fall Armyworm infestations to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) by GIZ Agroecological Innovations for Smallholder Pest Management project, we are pleased to share that the manual is already in use by the MoA through the support of the GIZ Global Programme on Sustainable Agricultural Systems and Policies (AgSys) project. The rollout IPM training is underway with 35 Master Trainers from all provinces currently being trained at the Kasisi Agricultural Training Centre. The training was inaugurated by the Director of Agriculture, Dr. Chizumba Shepande. The training is divided into two sections: the first section focuses on theoretical concepts, while the second section emphasizes practical application. These Master Trainers will subsequently cascade their knowledge to extension officers and farmers nationwide, thereby amplifying the manual’s impact at the grassroots level. 🌱🚜 #AgSys #EcoPM #IPMManual #SustainableFarming https://lnkd.in/d_uhDip6

Inspection is a phytosanitary measure that should be fair, technically justified, and consistently applied for similar situations and risk levels. Inspection designs should adhere to relevant international standards (ISPMs 23 and 31). In November and December, COLEAD organized a workshop on “Sampling and methods for detecting harmful organisms associated with the export of fresh fruits and vegetables’’. The aim of the workshop was to enhance the capacity of National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs) to develop and implement Sampling Approaches that are Risk-Based In accordance with the principles of the IPPC, and the WTO-SPS Agreement. There were two sessions in English that attracted 50 phytosanitary inspectors drawn from 15 countries from across #Africa, #Caribbean and the #Pacific. The objective of the workshop was to strengthen the capacity of National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs) to select appropriate sampling methodologies for the inspection or analysis of consignments to verify compliance with defined phytosanitary requirements. Specifically, they were able to set up a risk-based sampling plan in their organizations for a selected commodity that could be applicable to all cases of harmful organisms in the fruits and vegetable value chains. #planthealth #sps
