I’ve been going to gamescom since 2013 and this year, it was awesome to see Gamescom bouncing back to its pre-COVID glory! 🙌 These are my biggest takeaways from gamescom 2024 ⬇️ State of the Industry 🎮 While it's been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for the industry over the past few years, the adaptability of the industry continues to amaze me. I'm truly optimistic about the future – whether it's new technology, creative gameplay, or new ways to connect with players, the future of mobile gaming is looking bright 🌟 Trends, Highlights, and Releases 👀 - Monument Valley 3 from ustwo games , Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero from HoYoverse are the games I'm looking forward to playing! - M&A was a hot topic this year, and participating in a panel by Video Game Bar Association highlighted some of the trends. While VC investments have slowed recently, private equity funds are steadily rising. I think we're also likely to see more money going into PC games instead of mobile ones. Valuations also aren't as inflated as they used to be – I think that with founders being more realistic about their company's worth, we'll have more balanced and sustainable growth. - Connecting with people from the industry is my favorite part about attending conferences. As always, it was great to catch up with Ilker, Ronen, Naz, Shum, Stephen, Honor, Olliver and many, many more! I'm already looking forward to next year! 🎉 https://lnkd.in/dwEkVj2w

GDC is back. The #GDC2024 event is the first we would consider to be at the attendance levels we saw just before the pandemic. Attendees had beautiful weather, a bustling expo hall, and tons of great people to meet and talk shop across Yerba Buena Gardens and beyond. Mondays are normally lighter warm-up days for the conference, but we experienced quite a busy start with West Hall filled with Community and Biz Dev sessions. Tuesday increased this same activity with Wednesday and Thursday turning up the bustle from hall to hall as the expo floor opened up. Friday is generally a wrap-up day and our flight out of town. Regardless of which days you attended, it is clear to us that GDC is back to its prominent days pre-pandemic. Even though the conference had a lot of activity and discussions of all sorts, the dominant discussion above all was the poor state of the industry. Everyone we talked to was concerned either about the layoffs or the inability to get funding to hire folks for new projects. It was a depressing talking point for everyone. The industry's passion won't be dampened though, as we participated in just as many discussions on how the industry can pull itself up from its bootstraps and move forward. Thanks to MeetToMatch, Unity, PocketGamer.biz, Xsolla, IGDA Foundation, NVIDIA, and so many more for meeting with us, and of course, Game Developers Conference for their support. Without these great connections and associated industry events, we wouldn't be able to support the Events for Gamers calendar to the degree that you see it. Until next year's GDC 2024, see you at PAX East, Insomnia Gaming Festival, and Dstars to wrap up the month of March #GameDev #GDC #Nvidia #PocketGamer #Unity https://lnkd.in/gadeqDQy

While I am not going to GDC this year, if I had the time, resources and commitment, I would want to pursue a great meme. I would want to organize a single-day satirical "developers conference" at whatever bar/venue we could rent out next to the Moscone Center. Because if large companies like Activision, Epic and Unity have been able to do this in the past with larger facilities, then the little guy should be able to get away with it too. We could call it the "Legally Distinct Developers Summit" where anyone could volunteer to present a free talk, and to network with people who don't have enough money to buy tickets. We could also call it the "Broke Developers Conference" because we wouldn't have to charge anything for it. We should be able to technically do this for the "low" price of a couple thousand dollars to book out a place, because companies do this all the time, and it is cheaper than a booth; if it's at a bar, everyone could just buy their own drinks/food for less than the price of a ticket. The event sponsors would literally just be ourselves. It would be performance art of largely questionable value. Some actually-serious competing events may have greater reach by being fully online, but we just need to aim for a physical pop-up space that is hilariously adjacent, in proximity to people who feel that same friction/frustration. And again, if large companies could do this at a serious corporate scale, then why couldn't we at a silly party scale?

More GDC prep is happening, I'm booking meetings to discuss ways to help studios get games built and published. Message me here or use the contact form on the website if you'd like to meet at GDC. I'm also getting a lot of great feedback from potential partners. I started my outreach at DICE, and since then the core concepts of Roll To Hit Games have been validated over and over. We believe the best games are made through a combination of intuitive design, data, and community. Intuitive design is the inspired vision of Alexey Pajitnov when he created Tetris. Roberta Williams when she created Mystery House. Shigero Miyamoto when he saw that players are characters with personality. Yu Suzuki when he turned a motorcycle into a controller for the classic Hang On arcade game. We see the possibilities of our own creative powers and are willing to pursue them. Data provides for us some of the deepest understanding of how games work, how players respond to games, and seemingly endless perspectives on the definition of engagement. We use data to validate our assumptions and inform our choices. Player communities know what they want. Players are passionate and aware of what is fun in the games they play. We build games that people find worth playing because we give them what they want. We know what they want because we ask them. If they want meat and potatoes, we find a way to give them meat and potatoes and make it part of the fun. The outcome of these efforts will be thoughtful, engaging games that embody the spirits of adventure, mystery, exploration, and joy.

It is what we do at the Confluence. As a startup, but actually already with one of the largest Web3 Gaming Universes in the entire space when it comes to interoperable cross-platform portability and breadth of game modes and gameplay. The preamble had some juicy summary info: "The second Bain Video Game Consumption Survey looked at how gamers spend their time and money. Gamers told us that they like immersive games and want more interoperability across devices and platforms. They’re also spending more time socializing, shopping, and consuming other media in game environments. These trends are upending the industry’s dynamics as players identify more with the game and less with the device. Marketplaces could become the central focus for the customer relationship. Meanwhile, companies that grew out of a love for video games are now developing more mature capabilities so that they can compete with technology and media giants. It's an exciting time for the industry, and no company can afford to wait and see if they want to protect their spot on the leaderboard." https://lnkd.in/gcncguYr All are welcome to come and register an account and play for free, any of our games and enjoy our experiential worlds at theConfluence.World which feature a wide range of family-friendly gameplay for all ages across PC, mobile and VR and where your in-game and on-chain currencies, inventory and scoreboards are truly portable across platforms and devices.

Late to share the insights of #XDSREPORT, finally got time to finish reading! 📊💡 According to the report, the top-ranked location for Service Providers is the United States, with Canada and the UK tied in second place. Over the past few years, a noticeable shift in Service Providers' locations from Asia to Western countries has been observed. This shift underscores Price is no longer the sole determining factor for outsourcing decisions. The report also highlights that while mobile gaming dominates the market share, feedback from Service Providers indicates that the only growing segment is content development for consoles. This trend likely reflects consumers' continued demand for deep, high-quality gaming experiences, often found in console games. From a developer's perspective, this emphasizes the importance of focusing on console and PC platform games. Developers and Publishers are increasingly discovering new Service Providers through internal referrals, indicating the importance of maintaining a strong industry reputation. At Winking Studios we prioritize delivering top-notch artistic outsourcing solutions, backed by our industry credibility and active participation in various industry events to share our expertise and technology. The report also delves into the evolving landscape of AI in gaming outsourcing, presenting both risks and opportunities from the perspectives of buyers and sellers. Particularly noteworthy is the continued importance of artistic services, as highlighted in the Areas of Expected Growth According to Developers/Publishers. This report will be invaluable in preparing for the latter half of this year's XDS conference. A big shoutout to Chris Wren for his consistent and accurate industry data sharing. As longstanding partners of #XDS, we're committed to continuing our support and collaboration! 🤔 Not sure what's more stressful: the week of GDC or the week following GDC, when you have all the work you didn't do during the conference plus all the follow-ups. What do you think? I am a bit suspicious when I talk about web games since I love and live the web, but I can certainly say that we are living in the renaissance of web games. Why? Most key web gaming platforms were at the show, and many large gaming companies were interested in learning more about the space. Conversations that I deemed impossible a couple of years ago are now taking place, and, of course, some tech giants are entering the space. Exciting times! ❤️ From CrazyGames, we say a big thank you to those who took the time to meet with our team and exchange ideas during the show. Our message was loud and clear: The web revolution is not about us; it's about making gaming accessible to everyone, everywhere. On the web, you share/click a link, and you are good to play with friends, no installs, just fun! I don't think anything can be more frictionless than this. If you got this far, thanks for reading this. Now, back to follow-ups! PS: yes, we have the coolest hats. 😍

These passes will also grant access to the Beta Lounge Showcase and Networking on September 28, curated by DigiBC and featuring exclusive B2B opportunities for industry professionals to connect, collaborate, and explore new business opportunities in the creative tech industry. For the 35 free tickets, you can apply to up to all three events at this link: https://lnkd.in/ehm6PXTy Please keep in mind that you will need to handle or share expenses such as travel, accommodations, food, and other costs with friends or colleagues. We do this because we recognize there are over 10,000 people in serious need, with thousands facing challenging financial circumstances. By offering tickets only, we can support 15-20 times more people than all-cost ticket packages would allow. This approach acknowledges a tradeoff to locality, but we believe it’s worth it, as confirmed by repeated polls of community sentiment that is near-unanimous. My one request of the community is please don't contact me directly about these opportunities and use the Google form. This helps us achieve a scalable process. You will gain no advantage from writing me, and it will not count as an entry. Thank you again to GamesBeat and XP Gaming for their incredible generosity!
