"It is no longer enough for a business to put its own house in order. Scope 3 reporting means there is a broader responsibility for supply chain emissions. When we're selling a sideshaft to a customer, they're increasingly wanting to know what the carbon footprint of that is. They want to know whether we've done a life cycle assessment of that." Tom Salisbury, Director of Sustainability, recently sat down with Sustainability Magazine, to discuss the importance of product lifecycle management to sustainable manufacturing, from product concept to end-of-life. Advania's sustainability report for 2023 is published. It shows a lot of effort and ambition in all countries. ESG will become more important in the next years and we, like all other companies, have to improve. It is not enough to be good yourself and have ambitious goals as the IT industry is "only" responsible for <2% of the carbon footprint. We have to be part of the solution for our customers. How can we help them smartly lower their CO2 footprint. By using technology intelligently, it is estimated that the carbon footprint can be cut by 15 to 20%! That is why we are building the Dreamhouse "IT equipment recycling center" as we need to switch from linear to circular model for all electronic products. When it is fully operational, we will be able to reuse over 1 million devices and reduce our customers' carbon footprint from devices up to 50%! Well done to everyone who has contributed passionately to this very important issue that affects us all. Great work and more to come!

Sometimes as a sustainability professional (especially if I’m the only ‘expert’ in the room), it can feel as though everyone is looking at me for an answer, a magical solution. One thing I love about my job is that there isn’t one answer, we have to be innovative to find solutions to solve unique problems across complex, global supply chains. Magical solutions already exist, we just need to uncover them.

Yeah, no—I rather disagree with the below “hot take.” Pitting spending on sustainability reporting vs innovation against one another doesn’t really make sense. For one, prices for reporting will go down over time as companies streamline their processes. Currently, we’re in a reporting adoption phase, so there is naturally a reporting learning curve, resource crunch and implementation fatigue. But this is a temporary problem that comes with the onset of any new business requirement. It’s something for sustainability professionals to keep an eye on, bc their business could decline or transform more towards in-house roles after this period. More importantly, sustainability reporting isn’t just about celebrating impact. It’s also about accountability. Innovation without reporting is like saying: “we want to earn money as a business, but we don’t want to waste money on accounting software or professionals,” which sounds silly. The two go hand in hand. Using this analogy, doing business without accounting principles or documentation would allow companies to just pencil in attractive looking figures on balance sheets, etc. Similarly, in sustainability, there are a lot of innovation initiatives that lack a valid impact once you scratch the surface. Reporting allows investors and other interested people to investigate claims about sustainability impact. Reporting and assurance are the current available paper trails to share data that backs up claims and demonstrates year-over-year progress towards goals and targets, among other details.

Is sustainability reporting getting in the way of sustainable innovation? A recent IBM study found that organisations spent 43% more on sustainability reporting than on sustainable innovation. Reporting is obviously important for transparency and accountability. But... If sustainability teams are tied up with exhaustive reporting requirements, who is driving the action? And isn’t reporting without action just measurement for the sake of measurement? Any sustainability teams out there feeling that reporting is a distraction from the real work? Would love to hear your thoughts!
