Our latest blog is on the benefit cap, a policy that affects hundreds of thousands of people in the UK. We see on the frontline how the cap both increases the number of people who fall into homelessness and makes it harder for those trying to make their way out of homelessness. Give the blog a read on our website to find out what the cap is, how it works, and why it can be so damaging to people facing homelessness. https://lnkd.in/e3EQTdHh

The final component from #HomesForAll not emphasised in the Dec24 NPPF or other recent updates was to end homelessness. This morning, MHCLG announced councils will receive almost £1 billion of new funding next year to tackle and prevent homelessness in England. There's a long way to go but this appears to be another positive step in the right direction. https://lnkd.in/es7JP_GT #housing #homesforall #MHCLG #NPPF #homelessness #planning

An incredibly important piece this morning on Inside Housing from John Glenton. A quote that sticks with me is "As such, it is important for me to tell policymakers that after 35 years of working in the sector I’ve never known things to be so bad. Never." As John writes, it is imperative that the next government can provide sufficient and long term grant funding to support the building of more social and affordable homes. #SocialHousing #AffordableHomes
"We must not shy away from showing policymakers the truth of the homelessness crisis" - great piece from our executive director of care & support John Glenton. Depressing news this morning that 112,660 households were living in temporary accommodation at the end of last year. Within this number there were 145,800 homeless children living in temporary accommodation. "I understand why individual councils feel a genuine need to cut homelessness services. However, in the long run, this approach will be more expensive". "It is important for central government to understand that closing homelessness services is a false economy". "In the short-term, central government could act to protect funding for supported services in local authorities". https://lnkd.in/es_zHQDD

When people from across Ottawa’s housing and homelessness world get together, we can build a system that works better for everyone. The Moving UPP project brought together nearly 200 local thought-leaders, frontline staff, and people with lived experience of homelessness. Working together, they identified ways that Ottawa’s housing and homelessness systems could use the resources we currently have to build a more effective system that helps get people into homes faster and more easily. Our new youth homelessness report demonstrates the harrowing impact of homelessness on young lives, revealing nearly one in ten Youth Survey 2023 participants experienced homelessness in the past year. Whether enduring the harsh realities of sleeping rough, seeking refuge in crisis or transitional accommodation, or couch surfing, our Youth Survey confirms the experience of homelessness for young people can be distressing and scarring. Every young person deserves a safe, secure home as a launchpad into adulthood. Empowering young people to start their journey to adulthood on a solid footing can transform lives.
When young people experience homelessness, it makes everything harder. Our new Youth Survey report ‘The unfair divide: Disadvantage faced by young people who are homeless’ shines a light on the challenges these young people face, across multiple areas of their life, compared to those with stable housing. Ending homelessness for young people will require a range of approaches to make sure that experiences of homelessness are rare, brief and non-recurring. Learn more about the experiences of youth homelessness and solutions in our report. Download your copy today and register for our webinar on Tuesday 6 August.
